Makes me think of this set of bumper stickers I saw recently.
The back of a car with several bumper stickers. One says "Imagine No Religion". A second one says "The ONLY WALL we need is between CHURCH and STATE". A third is the logo for the Unitarian Universalist Church.

Confusing Nantucket and New Bedford is not a good start to this piece.
The US east coastal town of Nantucket, Massachusetts, where Moby Dick begins, became the whaling capital and earned its nickname, "The City That Lit the World". The whalers learnt about whales through direct observation, while scientists had specimens to dissect. Taxonomy divided whales and other animals into neat categories based on anatomical differences and evolutionary history. Finally, it seemed, humans had illuminated even the shadowy underwater realm.

And “The Sun Also Rises” includes the entire quote from Ecclesiastes as an epigraph. Even when the average reader was more familiar with the bible authors still didn’t expect them to know every reference.
"You are all a lost generation."

-Gertrude Stein in conversation .
"One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth forever. ... The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to the place where he arose. The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. ... All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again ."
-Ecclesiastes.

14. WHo are the "Coliadae" among the inhabitants of Ithaca and what is the phagilos?
After the slaughter of the suitors the relatives of the dead men rose up against Odysseus; but Neoptolemus was sent for by both parties to act as arbiter. a He adjudged that Odysseus should depart from the country and be exiled for homicide from Cephallenia, Zacynthus, and Ithaca; and that thecompanions and the relatives of the suitors should recompense Odysseus each year for the injuries which they had done to his estate. Odysseus accordingly departed to Italy; but the recompense he formally transferred to his son, and ordered the inhabitants of Ithaca to pay it to him. The recompense consisted of barley, wine, honeycombs, olive-oil, salt, and beasts for sacrifice that were older than phagiloi; according to Aristotle's a statement, a lamb is a phagilos. Now Telemachus bestowed freedom upon Eumaeus and his associates, and incorporated them among the citizens; and the clan of the Coliadae is descended from Eumaeus, and that of the Bucolidae from Philoetius.

Resistance to the new technology, he continued, is “very much like sitting here saying, ‘Well, I believe the horse and the buggy is really where it’s at. These cars, they break down, they need gas, there’s all kinds of problems with them and pretty soon they’ll be making them into tanks, and then they’ll be killing people. It’s terrible.’”

“Jews who disagree with me on Israel obviously aren’t observant enough” is some JewBelong-level stupidity.
My own advice for the perplexed among liberal American Jews would be, first, participate actively in the religious life of the community. That will connect you deeply to your people, back through time and everywhere in the world in the present.
Second, and inextricably linked, study the Torah and the other essential texts.
