Im sure there are actually horrible ghouls saying nightmarish things online but I actually think people rallying to support cultural institutions with their bodies in the face of the fascist assault on beauty and art is good

A drawing by a 5-year-old child in detention:
Drawing in black on white paper of four frowning small stick figures behind bars. One of them has a speech bubble saying “Let s go”.

At the top written in a child’s print handwriting are the words, “I am 5 years old.”

At the bottom left corner is a box with the name of the child’s attorney, Eric Lee.

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

Organizers in Twin Cities making rare plea for folks to share broadly: ICE ops have changed & escalated this week. They've moved to a 'flood-the-zone' strategy, nabbing anyone they can from bus stops, the sidewalk, cars, or homes. This means indiscriminate abductions and obviously no warrants.

Love this from Guillermo del Toro
“Be kind, be involved, believe in your art,” he said. “At a time when people tell you art is not important, that is always the prelude to fascism. When they tell you it doesn’t matter, when they tell you a fucking app can do art you say, if it’s that important, why the fuck do they want it so bad? The answer is because they think they can debase everything that makes us a little better, a little more human. And that, in my book, and in my life, includes monsters.”

Another favorite essay of the year: Daniel Yadin's essay in @thedriftmag.com on romantasy and the desire for escapism in catastrophe. It was so funny while speaking to the very real temptation to abdicate agency. Some favorite passages:

For today’s newsletter, I shared a “rage tangent” from a longer work in progress about artwashing, genocide profiteers who fund major arts organizations, the false scarcity they create, and how artists in the imperial core can envision liberatory arts spaces. jesseroth.beehiiv.com/p/screaming

⭕️ BREAKING: The latest National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) drafted in the U.S. Congress would require a “continual assessment … of international state arms embargoes on Israel” — with language aimed at filling any “defense capability gaps” those embargoes create, Zeteo reports.

This means the U.S. would explicitly use federal law to step in and supply weapons to Israel whenever other countries cut off arms to halt Israel’s ongoing violations across the region.

Several countries have moved to suspend or restrict arms exports to Israel over its two-year long genocide in Gaza, including Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, and Canada, which froze new export permits while allowing existing contracts to proceed. A group of independent United Nations Human Rights Council–mandated experts, including Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, have publicly called for a full arms embargo on Israel.

🇮🇪🇪🇸🇸🇮🇳🇱 BREAKING | Four major broadcasters – Ireland, Spain, Slovenia and the Netherlands – have pulled out of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest after the EBU confirmed Israel will be allowed to compete despite the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Despite a wave of pressure and boycott threats urging the EBU to bar Israel, the union declined not to hold a vote on Israel’s eligibility. Instead it introduced voting-system reforms, limiting televotes per device and restoring juries in the semi-finals, all meant to curb alleged vote manipulation after evidence that Israel benefited from state-backed promotion and coordinated voting in 2025.

The 2026 contest in Vienna now faces its largest boycott in years, raising fresh doubts about Eurovision’s claim to be a unifying cultural event.Channel 4 News

The EBU and participating national broadcasters met in Geneva today to debate whether Israel should be allowed to continue participating in Eurovision, with Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain all threatening to boycott.

The vibe shift today is, I think, due to the fact that New Yorkers were on the offensive instead of the defensive. Usually with protests, demonstrators have to defend the space, defend their right to march, etc. They get beat up and pushed around and antagonized into chaos and trauma. 1/

We’re on the right track! Make sure you track your ballot to confirm it is accepted, NOT challenged. Check our links in bio to do so! More votes will be counted on Monday!
A Katie Wilson for mayor campaign graphic that says we're right on track! today we won about 55% of the newly counted ballots. we are within 2% of the incumbent. if the drop on Monday follows the same trajectory, we will be squarely ahead. it's going to be a long weekend. many ballots are being challenged! Make sure you track your ballot at the link in bio. our amazing volunteers will be working to make sure every vote counts.

It’s hard to convey just how much Chicagoans are mobilizing against ICE. Don’t want to downplay the harm, or make it seem like a fair fight. But in neighborhoods across this city, ICE is getting chased by people blowing whistles and shouting. People are running TOWARD ICE to protect their neighbors.

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.
