It feels like what often begins as a criticism of settler colonialist impositions of gender norms degrades into gender tourism, where people being discussed are isomorphically reduced to the "roles" they occupy like actors in a play.

The woman who lent it to me was an incredible ally, I hold no animus towards her at all. She was deeply supportive and helped me enormously with the talk. But it was striking that she had been assigned it in college and hadn't realized that the author failed to use the basic lexicon of transness.

The author was a widely-cited scholar of "third genders", the book focused specifically on the topic. She wrote at length about how it was used to circumnavigate homophobia or undermine trans womanhood, but in words that made it very clear she was empathic to the first and supportive of the latter.

Years ago I was preparing an epistemology of gender in psychiatry lecture and included a "third gender" table I've since deleted. An ex lent me a very popular book on the anthropology of gender to prep, and I made it 5 pages in before realizing the author was using "trans women" to refer to men.

All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.

"Medicaid work requirements" are above water with the American electorate (net +18). Calling the same policy "Medicaid eligibility cuts" meaningfully decreases support (net -11). I do not understand the insistence on adopting the framing of those trying to destroy Medicaid

panel’s resolution of this case.
First, today Louisiana—joined by Arkansas and Alabama—filed a
lawsuit in the Western District of Louisiana against nearly three dozen
individuals and entities responsible for remotely dispensing FDA-
approved mifepristone in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Alabama. See
Louisiana v. Nouhavandi, No. 2:26-cv-03836 (W.D. La.) (attached). As
the complaint in that case illustrates, none of those individuals and
entities could carry out their current operations without the 2023
REMS’s removal of the in-person dispensing requirement.
Second, also today Louisiana—joined by Arkansas and Alabama—
filed a motion for leave to file a bill of complaint (attached), Louisiana v.
New York, in the United States Supreme Court against New York,
Massachusetts, and California. The bill of complaint challenges the
telehealth shield laws of those states on various legal grounds.
Both complaints explain how Louisiana’s success in Louisiana v.
FDA will eliminate the flood of FDA-approved mifepristone into the
State. Louisiana’s success in Louisiana v. Nouhavandi will eliminate the

ability of nearly three dozen of the most prominent actors to illegally send
any abortion drugs into the State. And Louisiana’s success in Louisiana
v. New York will strip all shield-law state residents—regardless of any

People don’t realize how many rights have rolled back in <2 years for some of the most vulnerable youth in the foster care and adoption systems, but it is extremely grim. A couple of years ago myself and colleagues wrote a paper outlining the decades-long playbook. This post explains the strategy.

For those following the Bates case in Oregon, she has agreed to a settlement opening up the process for her to be an adoptive parent despite stating that she would not affirm an LGBTQ+ child. This ADF quote says a lot about the aim of the larger project. www.lgbtqnation.com/2026/09/god-...

In the end, the only group excluded from the process up front are those with religious beliefs like Jessica's. Conservative Christians need not apply."

Incidentally, there are times where they've tried to do this and failed. Most notably in sports and with bathrooms. However in both cases, the application to cis and trans people is not equal. Cis women stopped from entering bathrooms causes outrage and often prompts apologies, the obverse does not.

Evan makes an important distinction here: at times we're used to sneak in bans or test the waters. This is particularly true with reproductive care and "parental freedom" laws. Mostly though, policies aimed at trans people are crafted with precision because they know no one else will care.

Anti-trans policies are policies of deliberate harm. When they ban surgery, they make sure to provide allowances for non-consensual intersex surgeries. If they ban HRT, they always specify for trans people. They workshop these to avoid being enjoined in courts that might care about you but not us.
