It was an honor to be in conversation with @reveleth.com and @johannamellis.bsky.social on this episode of @endofsportpod.bsky.social about transphobia in and beyond sports and the necessity for solidarity among so many linked struggles over gender, race, and disability. youtu.be/tJT9qDjQtiE?...

Not to mention an accessibility crisis. Online teaching opens up so many possibilities for people; losing it means leaving disabled people in the dust again

Here’s the thing: I could probably come up with lots of creative, AI-proof online approaches. But finding the time to reflect an innovate comes at a premium. I often revamp my courses, but this is an order of magnitude much higher in redesign. AI is not a pedagogical crisis, it’s a labor crisis.

Show us what your love looks like when we are under attack. Pick up a sword or shield - whichever suits you better - and wield it. Many of us have been welding both for way too long and could use more comrades much more than we need another hug. Ok done for now.

Oh and, for the cis allies, it is so important to understand that what trans people are experiencing is the threat of literal extermination, not just stigmatization or social discomfort. I don't need to be reminded by slogans that we've always existed or that we're "loved."

And sometimes (this is a personal feelings statement rather than an analytic one) it feels a certain type of way to read how quickly some commentary on these bans glides past transfemmes to the generalization which, of course, is analytically true.

Therefore we need to hold both the specificity of the vulnerability of transfeminine people and the generalized vulnerability distributed across various genders under cisheteropatriarchy.

(2) While trans girls, women, & femmes are the specific monsters whose bodies these bans imagine violating in order to discover and punish, it will be trans people of all genders & cis women - esp cis Black women & other WOC - who also become targets of the sexual violence of transvestigation

And to point out multiple things being true at once: (1) It matters that these bans are always aimed at transfeminine people participating in women's sports, specifically, and it isn't mere oppression Olympics to point that out. Our analysis needs that specificity.

The trans people in girls' & women's sports case is horrific in too many ways to fully account for, for me, right now. But just to say, in the big picture it is part of an effort to legislate trans people out of existence. "Fairness in sports" is a BS distraction from the intended extermination.

Birthright Citizenship was perhaps the most straightforward legal question to come across the SCOTUS this century so the fact that it wasn't 9-0 is hella scary but at least it was the right decision.

There is no grieving great enough for Kohen Wiley. To wish Kohen's family peace or condolences is so insufficient I can't fathom it. May Kohen's memory be a blessing to his family. Abolish the police. There is no reforming this. Abolition now.

I feel good about the Douglass half of this conference paper, but feel out of my depth with Twain. Thank you for any and all recommendations!

I'm working on some writing where I want to contrast Frederick Douglass's "arriving early" to political causes with Twain's "arriving late" as a way of thinking about radical political consciousness raising and organizing work in the contemporary moment.

C19 American Lit friends: What are a couple of great go-to readings on Mark Twain's evolving political views from the pro-slavery and racist southern sympathizing he grew up in and retained for decades to his more fully-fleshed out left/progressivism towards the end of his career?

Good morning. I want to try to use summer to post more on here, perhaps professionally about what I am trying to write. But, priorities: Israel and the US are still committing genocide in Palestine. And also waging imperialist was in Lebanon and Iran. These imperial powers need to end.

Eight years after completing my PhD, I got a tenure & promotion letter today. Now Associate Professor of English and Director of Gender & Women's Studies at New Mexico Highlands University. I want to do some research to see if there have been any trans faculty given tenure here before me. 🤔

And this year I watched students that have taken 2, 3, 4, and even 5 and 6 classes with me graduate. Students I advised through the English major or minor or the Gender & Women's Studies minor graduated. My first student whose M.A. Thesis I chaired walked! I am so so proud of these students! 👏🎉

What a wonderful graduation weekend at NMHU 💜 The class of 2026 is significant for me because it marks my fourth year at Highlands, making this kind of my "senior year" in relation to first-year students who began the same semester as me.

Something I haven’t seen mentioned is that more than TSA work at airports! Janitors, food service, retail, etc. I have no faith that security clearance to work at an airport will keep those people safe from ICE, especially brown and Black people with accents.

if you're travelling and you are a documented citizen (esp if you're white/white-passing), you need to speak up & interrupt any racial profiling you witness. We are absolutely defeated if we allow ICE agents to harass people in the broad light of crowded airports. Don't be a good deputy citizen.

The U.S. is the most anti-life entity on the planet. The whole "pro-life" thing was always obviously a lie to cover for the actual desire to control marginalized people's bodies. But it's vertigo-inducing to read Ross's prescient analysis and see so obviously how anti-life this whole empire is.

Taught Loretta Ross's formative essay "The Color of Choice" in Feminist Theory this week. And it feels a type of way to return to it post-Dobbs, as the US is starving people to death in Cuba, facilitating a genocide in Palestine, waging war on Iran, helping Israel to murderously steal Lebanon's land

Do not let the Western media manufacture consent. Hold the anti-imperialist line. You can be against the oppression of Iranian people by their own regime and not use that as excuse to support a US & Israeli act of aggression. Western bombs do not bring freedom or liberation to the SWANA region.

This has always been ICE and in truth policing for Black, Indigenous, and Latiné folks. It’s just happening at a scale where many more people are exposed to it.

This is a type of ICE "ruse," and is a tactic the agency has deployed for decades. In 2015, ICE went to my former client's house posing as cops and convinced his 16-year-old US citizen niece to call him home from work with a fake story (the "identity theft ruse" explained below), then arrested him.
Fact sheet from the Immigrant Defense Project: "Ways that ICE pretends to be local police: When Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents go to homes
or in the community to arrest non-citizens, they often tell lies or “ruses”
about who they are and what they are doing. ICE agents use ruses to
get into homes without judicial warrants, to obtain information, or
to arrest people outside of their homes. A common ICE ruse is that
agents pretend they are local law enforcement. ICE agents will say they
are “police” and purposefully not identify themselves as ICE agents.
This can be confusing as they are often dressed in plain-clothes or in
uniforms that do not indicate that they are ICE. ICE police ruses can
also happen over the phone.

Below is a list of types of ruses:

In Person Ruses:
- General Investigation Ruse: “We are conducting an investigation
and want to ask some questions.”
- Criminal Investigation Ruse: "We are investigating a crime, can
we ask you a few questions?”
- Identity Theft Ruse: “Your son is the victim of identity
theft, and we need to talk to him.”
- Photo Ruse: “Have you seen this suspect?”

Ruses (By Phone):
- Lost ID Ruse: "We found a lost ID."
- You're a Suspect Ruse: "We’re investigating a crime
and you are a suspect.”

In all cases, the goal is to get the person to come outside a home or go to ICE, after which they are identified, arrested, detained, and deported.

Next to the list of ruses is a dialog box with examples of comments:
- “POLICE, open up”
- “I’m Detective [name]”
- “We are the warrant squad”
- “We are from the XYZ precinct”
- “I’m calling from [local court name] to confirm your address”
- “I’m calling from the District Attorney’s office”
- “We are looking for X, who is a victim of identity theft”
