People are discussing how Halloween candy is so terrible these days. A reminder that alot of the candy we eat is made with women’s prison labor. Russell Stover’s factory in Kansas busses in 150 women a day via a convict leasing program to staff their candy factory.
Russell Stover has begun using prison labor to make candy in
Kansas
A Russell Stover candy factory in Kansas has begun hiring incarcerated workers through a work release program, Eoin Higgins reports in his newsletter, The Flashpoint. About 150 women are bussed in from the Topeka Correctional Facility and paid $14 an hour, but the prison keeps some of their wages for room and board, taxes, transportation, and other expenses. When all is said and done, they take home less than $6 per hour. These deductions are high, but elsewhere in the country, they're even higher: In our May series on prison

I can respect this perspective but I cannot adopt it. If a system provides people of earnest intent and strong convictions no ethical choice, the system is folly, not the convictions.

Then it's not so much a difference of opinion or political strategy but a difference in our ethical convictions. Fair enough.

So if you had to vote between someone who hates all POC, or for someone who hates only POC from certain countries, you'd vote for the latter and your conscience would be clean?

This is a moral atrocity and it needs to be loudly condemned as such. There is a reason that democracies *don't* do publicly televised executions (and why many don't execute people at all): it inculcates and rewards bloodthirst, which corrupts the spirit and corrodes the foundation of the polity.

If your conscience lets you vote for someone bigoted against your community, it's your vote to cast. But I won't accept that particular brand of humiliation.

I'm saying my moral compass dictates not supporting a bigot. If that washes out electorally to mean another bigot wins then it's the system that's failed, not my moral compass.

I'm saying the cost is unjustifiable either way and voting third party or not at all is an option. People use the cliche of the lesser evil to whitewash the guilt of voting for a bigot but rarely have the spine to engage with the costs they're asking others to bear culturally.

So to your mind the public bigotry incurs no cost on trans people worth acknowledging? Or are you saying it's worth the cost? It has to be one or the other I'm quite excited about which you pick. If it's the latter, are you trans? If not, what do you think gives you the right to say it's worth it?

I think that's a great way to frame it, personally. Obviously subjective, too. My metric for "literary-ness" is an ambiguous spectrum of to what degree a book respects not only a reader's intelligence but their taste. The measurement varies by reader, to some degree, but it feels useful.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Hey cis people You do not get to use the word “tranny”. Not if someone else uses it. Not if you’re making a joke. Not if you’re being ironic. Not if you’re making fun of someone who said it. It is not your word to use UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

It all started on this day. Thank you for a wonderful twenty years.
Text in the center reads: 20 Years Oct. 2006 - Oct. 2026, clarkesworldmagazine.com

(right) Cover art for issue 241 by Marcel Deneuve is "Labyrinths of Azarax" and features a blue and white mechanical eye in a circular opening looking at a small, white, glowing humanoid figure standing on a large pipe in the tunnel. Many pipes line the walls, all heading out to the main room. Pipes are yellow and gray. Room beyond is blue.

(left) Cover art for issue 1 by Tomasz Pietrzyk is "The Town of the Towers" and features a surreal town of yellowy white distorted towers with reddish orange roofs that overhang the towers and rise to a point. Mishapen dark windows and doors are scattered about on the buildings. Orange sky gives the entire piece a warm tone.
