Again—again and again and again and again—conservatives make it clear that claims about being “tough on crime” are not about actual public safety, but social control. Again and again and again and again. Yet the insincerity of their claims is all too often glossed over or ignored altogether.

Universities bring in foreign students ... to undercut the wages of American residents? What? This is exactly backwards. Foreign students subsidize the tuition of American students. I wonder why the VP who follows Nazis online has this all wrong. Probably an innocent, non-racist mistake.

WHOA. This is big news. Mr. Soliman is a 31-year-old gay man from Egypt who came here at 3 with a green card. He lost his green card after a conviction, but an immigration judge found that he would be persecuted in Egypt and barred sending him there. He's locked in a hotel in Equatorial Guinea now.
A federal judge has ordered the Department of Homeland Security to return Ahmed Soliman to the United States, five months after he was expelled to Equatorial Guinea, a country where he has no ties, in a decision that could have far-reaching implications for thousands of others subjected to the Trump administration’s third-country removal scheme.

Arizona District Court Judge John C. Hinderaker, a Trump appointee, ruled that DHS violated the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment and “must facilitate Plaintiff’s release from custody in Equatorial Guinea and return to the United States and must ensure his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent to Equatorial Guinea.”

Just read a very credulous article in a state bar magazine that says prediction markets are different from gambling because users "buy and sell event contracts" that pay money if the event happens and nothing if they don't. That's a bet, man. A bet dressed in securities clothing is still just a bet.

“Vandalize the demographics of America” is either a chilling phrase suggesting that Mullin is a white nationalist or an absurdly meaningless bit of pablum which ignores 250 years of the constantly shifting demographics of a nation of immigrants.

Underneath is a picture of Mullin with a quote "How do you turn a country from democracy to socialism? You have to change the demographics."

The OPT rule is out, and it's a mess. DHS is aware that this rule will be challenged in court, but didn't even bother to do a defensible analysis of the costs. For example, their estimate of costs that this rule will impose on the public over 10 years is a range between $241 million to $29 billion.
Due to high uncertainty in regulated parties’ behavioral responses, DHS uses ranges to estimate costs and transfers. These ranges reflect different scenarios for how many OPT fees the educational institutions would fund. If all OPT fees are paid by schools, the main impact would be the transfer of payments from the fees. If some OPT fees are not paid by schools due to reduced participation, there would be opportunity costs from the lost OPT participation. DHS estimates the annualized costs of the proposed rule would range from $32 million to $8.2 billion, with a primary estimate of $4.1 billion discounted at 3 percent. Discounted at 7 percent, the estimated annualized costs of the proposed rule would range from $34 million to $8.2 billion, with a primary estimate of $4.1 billion. DHS estimates the 10-year total costs of the proposed rule would be $275 million to $69.9 billion, with a primary estimate of $35.1 billion discounted at 3 percent (see Table 10). Discounted at 7 percent, the estimated total costs of the proposed rule would be $241 million to $57.7 billion, with a primary estimate of $29.0 billion.

Pretty wild to see Alito describe reliance on Obergefell as "much more concrete" than reliance on Roe v. Wade, because Roe was merely about "women's ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in." If it's a Ladies Issue, he just doesn't give a shit. www.cbsnews.com/news/samuel-...
"One of the important factors we take into account in deciding whether we should reexamine a past decision is the degree to which there has been reliance on the decision," he said. "Obviously a great deal had changed in the country as a result of Obergefell. There was a lot of reliance in various ways on the decision in Obergefell."

I pointed out that people thought Roe v. Wade was settled law of the land, had organized their lives around it. Overturning Roe also would have consequences.

Obergefell, he said, was different.

"After Obergefell, people of the same sex got married and entered into contracts … it was much more concrete," he said. "Whereas with Roe, the argument was made that it had an effect on people's ideas, women's ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in, that this would have an effect on the society. It was much more abstract than what would've been involved had we been asked to overrule Obergefell."
