I finally got around to finishing up and publishing my debut in February! When I first started writing it—about a society ruled by a cult of Priests serving an AI god—it felt almost like fantasy sci-fi. Now feeling a little more grounded in reality 😅

Son recently got hard into Pokemon, which led my wife and I down the rabbit hole of how do Jynx reproduce? Apparently with any of the following lineup, really putting the freak in Game Freak.
A super vascular muscle Pokemon called ConkeldurrA twiggy, all angular Pokemon with a spoon fetish called Alakazam A mime. It’s just happy to be included. A pile of goo, making cleanup confusing.

Currently switching things up and pivoting into non-fiction for a bit with reading Proto, and then maybe Dancing in the Glory of Monsters to thoroughly depress myself before resuming my typically scheduled fantasy escapism. Next fantasy book is likely Moonbound. #booksky #readsky

This is such a nitpick, but it irks me re why the Turks call the Black Sea (Kara Deniz) black. The naming is likely due to cardinal directions in Turkish having corresponding colors—black for north and white for south. It’s why the Mediterranean, south of Turkey, is called Ak Deniz (White Sea)
An excerpt from the book “Proto” saying: “It was probably Turkish mariners who, pursuing the fish, encountered its [the Black Sea’s] treacherous squalls and dubbed it 'black'.”

No one gets a PhD in "what if the people in charge of the Pentagon are chud idiots and they collapse the world economy because caring about strategy is Woke and Gay". But that is (self-evidently) a far more likely thing to happen, simply because it only requires stupidity to accomplish.

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

You don’t have to share an author’s - or anyone’s - faith/beliefs to not be disrespectful about it. I’m seeing so much nonsense from folks who claim open-mindedness and then in the same breath punch down on anyone who has a view different from theirs. Be RESPECTFUL and KIND.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In panel one, we see a man sitting at a restaurant table. He is sweating. He says "Y-you have beautiful eyes".
The second panel zooms in on the man's face. He says, "I'm sorry. I'm just so nervous."
In panel three we see that a biblically accurate angel is sitting on the other side of the table.
In panel four we zoom in on the angel's face, who says "BE NOT AFRAID".

I drew a comic strip.
a comic strip. The first panel shows a goblin in a long coat approaching a guard. The second panel has the goblin saying "we're just normal men!". The third panel has the guard replying "what do you mean normal men?". The fourth panel shows both the goblin in the coat and the guard. The coat is beginning to open to show many goblins within. The guard looks suspicious and a goblin emerging from the coat is saying "We're just innocent men!"

👇 This is necessary reading - about the closing of one particular program, but giving insights into the bigger war on education:
Starting with the last claim first, about “financial return,” closing the department will supposedly save Virginia Tech $121,185 per annum—barely a rounding error in an institutional operating budget of $2.5 billion. The neoliberal university may function like a corporation, but budgets are always moral documents that demonstrate what an institution values. So, if we’re talking about such a small portion (0.004%) of the budget, and yet “financial return on investment” was supposedly a driving factor in the decision, then we have to ask about those institutional values. Or, to put it another way, it’s fair to ask what Virginia Tech received for its $121,185.

I’m not sure if a single genre of music maps onto Twin Rivers. But I was listening to a lot of trip-hop at the time, as well as post-rock, so those may be closest. Both these genres can also have a lot of overlapping instrumentation which reflects the multiple POVs in the novel. #TTBChat #Writesky
