Decided to pull out an important part of the interview. Generative AI is often justified with comparisons to the cost of Amazon Web Services ($57bn) or Uber's ($32bn) in losses, when its costs and losses are hundreds of billions of dollars worse. And there's no post-bubble redemption story.

In The End, AI Is Impossible To See As Anything But A Bubble
Putting aside any personal feelings I may or may not have about AI or the people that use it, the current state of affairs is impossible to reconcile with reality. Both OpenAI and Anthropic project to be making more than TSMC by 2029 and more than NVIDIA by 2030, and neither of them have any real path to profitability outside of accounting tricks and outright lies.

Both companies are victims of their own success, and a media campaign only made possible in an economy dominated by Business Idiots.

Because of the ridiculous hype around both of these companies, every single funding round allowed them to raise effectively as much as they wanted at whatever valuation they wished. Their unprofitable, unsustainable businesses meant that they both had to raise or start raising every quarter, each time raising more and more money, each time sending their valuations skyrocketing to the point where the only avenue is an eventual IPO for a company that combines the worst parts of the economics of a vineyard, airline and cryptocurrency scam.

Anthropic and OpenAI raised these funding rounds by sharing projections that should, in a rational society, constitute fraud. In no way could either of these companies reasonably believe they’ll make $200 billion a year - that’s $16 billion a month! - and because they’ve decided to con people with these ridiculous fucking extrapolations of revenue, they both will now have terrible trouble raising funding if anything changes.

Both Anthropic and OpenAI are priced for perfection. They cannot slow down. Both have to make at least $40 billion in revenue this year and $80 billion or more in 2027, based entirely on their own projections, their own promises, and their $1.1 trillion in compute commitments that they’ve made based on these fantastical guesstimates of growth.

Really, tell me: what does OpenAI do if it runs low on capital? Its growth is slowing. Its Q2 numbers were so bad…
