@bsky.app Max Porter's first novel has been adapted for stage, and opens in Sydney this weekend. Here's my view of the novel.

Mythical, slippery, shapeshifting: Grief is the Thing With Feathers transforms tragedy into literature
Max Porter’s stories of people on the margins are told in fragments, flickering images, surprising swirls of language and wit.

Journalism, be better! BBC headline makes the assertion: 'Democrats have effectively shut down the House of Representatives until September by repeatedly forcing Republicans to vote against – or dodge – measures to release the "Epstein files".' Really?

US House speaker shuts down chamber to block Epstein vote
The decision to bring forward the summer recess means Republican leaders can delay a politically fraught vote on the disclosures.

There are so many take-always from this weekend’s election, but one I particularly like is the term “bunyip Trumpism” (viz, what was repudiated and rejected by voters)

When my smart watch is on the the charger instead of on my wrist, I resent taking any steps or even any breaths because if they aren’t being recorded, what’s the point? (I know I’m being stupid; but still I feel those are wasted steps/breaths 😂)

1. Sydney cranes; notice how often cranes are found in monogamous pairs. 2. A verandah in which I would NEVER set foot. Oh Sydney, you crazy darling.

From the unsinkable John Birmingham, speaking of …? “A collapsing orange supergiant of mental illness and morbid spite who self-detonates the US economy to, what, take out a bunch of fentanyl penguins on Heard Island?”

I have (some) respect for the Washington Post but this tin-eared attitude to abuse of a native animal really misses the mark. Dude, this is not performative ire; it’s protection of local wildlife from some attention-seeking “influencer”

Tonight I attended a brilliant lecture by Dist.Prof Phil Morgan of Cardiff U, specialist in autonomous vehicles; and came home to be shown the cartoon in this week’s New Scientist. Serendipity. Shout out to my glorious colleagues in the Collaborative Robotics Lab at the University of Canberra.

Cobargo Folk Festival under a shimmering blue sky (no pun intended). I must look incompetent because yesterday the good folk on the registration desk strapped my band to my wrist, but today I see everyone is having to wrangle the bands themselves.

Tonight’s ABC news was all about (a) tennis and (b) the American clown car. I’m not interested in tennis or in American clown cars. Can we have a new news broadcaster that is all about poetry and Staffies? Please?

At Canberra airport, where it seems Julie Nolke is working at the cafe. “Oh sorry no, we don’t have any ice cream right now”. “Yeah, no, I don’t think I can do that”. “Are you in a hurry? Because the machine just shit itself”. All in a soft Canadian accent, with charmingly self-deprecating smile.

I’m out for a twilight walk accompanied by the not-very-melodious song — shouts — shrieks — of the local sulphur-created cockatoos organising their mobs into going home and getting to bed. Squarck! Aarkkk! 🦜🦅

I’m several millennia behind the times, but on the better-late-than-ever principle, I’m delighted to learn that the first-ever (authenticated) library in history bore the slogan “the house of healing for the soul”. Go Thebes!
