I gotta add my old lady horror story: my mom would go out and do the shopping in the late evening and leave us in the car. Alone. A 3, 5, and 6 year-old in a dark parking lot for thirty minutes while she shopped. Her logic was we couldn't be trusted not to tear up the house.

May the 4th... ... be with my wife, whom I met on this day 12 years ago and very nearly fell instantly head over heels in love with her. We hiked, geeked out over comics and sci-fi, had beers, and made plans for a second meeting that eventually turned into forever. Qapla' baby!

Years ago I supplemented my teaching income as a restaurant server. Sometimes the special sold out. Word went around, “86 the lobster mac&cheese!” At no point did I grab a knife and find some lobster pasta to stab. It meant gone, over.

I suspect the poems are being read by people who happen to be reading another story and give it a try, but that is kind of debunked by the post about a book of spec poems selling well.

I spoke to one editor who literally shuddered when I said we publish poetry too - when I dug down it turns out he is actually repulsed by the idea of formatting poems. I feel that struggle. From web to pdf to anthology, every font change leads to a bunch of work. Sometimes we use an image on the web

My magazine (Trollbreath) publishes spec fiction and poetry. Sometimes we receive a poem we love, but it just doesn’t have a speculative angle to it and we reject. We don’t have a checklist of is this spec, but as lovers of the genre we know if the piece fits the overall vibe.
