I *hate* this "digital divide" framing for AI; even libraries marshal it to justify their "AI literacy classes," ensuring all have "access" for self-actualization and economic opportunity. Maybe instead some folks are sufficiently literate, and they're instead choosing *principled refusal*.

Ive been thinking the same thing, and kind of hesitant to say it out loud because we're already a group considered to be luddites and technophobes, when its really our sense that students absolutely must train their own minds to read primary sources, and think/write with primary+secondary sources.

Did you know that even prompting an LLM to edit your grammar might alter the semantic meaning of your text and remove your human voice? If you're in Bergen on Friday September 4 you can hear Isadora White and Marwa Abdulhai present their recent paper on this. They took human-written short essays, asked LLMs to revise them and found significant changes well beyond just copyediting. This is a large-scale computational study, but the image shared here shows two examples of how this happens.

We'll also have talks by John Gallagher, whose newsletter on AI and writing I read religiously, and by Rashid Mustafin, a PhD student at NHH, and Pedro Jacobetty. And before these public talks the AI STORIES team gets to spend two days in a workshop with these and other brilliant people - I'm so excited!

From the first piece I published about generative AI (in the Boston Globe a couple of weeks before ChatGPT was released in 2022). Full text outside paywall here: writinghacks.substack.com/p/what-we-lo...
I tell my students that writing — in the classroom, in your journal, in a memo at work — is a way of bringing order to our thinking or of breaking apart that order as we challenge our ideas. We look at the evidence around us. We consider ideas we disagree with. And we try to bring a shape to it all. Sometimes my students see the process differently. They see writing a paper as a hoop they are being asked to jump through, a way for me to evaluate them and pronounce them successful or not. In other words, they see writing solely as a product. If the end point rather than the process were indeed all that mattered, then there might be good reason to turn to GPT-3. But if, as I believe is the case, we write to make sense of the world, then the risks of turning that process over to AI are much greater.

There are many ominous science fiction stories about what might happen if we are defeated by our own machines. But the evidence suggests that rather than being conquered by machines run amok, we’re willingly outsourcing too many processes to them, including writing. And since GPT-3 isn’t actually thinking, no one will be thinking. Perhaps the most worrying outcome is that we will lose our commitment to the idea that we ought to believe what we say and write — an idea that is already under threat from disinformation campaigns and the speed at which social media moves.

I wrote this a couple years ago about Caitlin Clark, whose fame had already become, to borrow a phrase, the modality in which class and race and gender get lived in the WNBA. defector.com/who-made-cai...
Yet the league partisans are correct in their impulse to identify something normal, something structural to the WNBA working itself out here. What's happening is a kind of class polarization among the players. Clark’s celebrity is now the terrain on which her colleagues have mounted a resistance to the league’s respectability regime—to the very idea of the Good White Girl, which was always above all a means of differentiating and therefore controlling the workforce, the WNBA’s answer to the NBA’s Greedy Thug. This goes some way toward explaining, for instance, the loose campaign afoot in the media and even among her fellow players to pressure Clark into disavowing the bad parts of her fandom. It is an effort to enlist her in the project of refusing, as Paige Bueckers did a couple years ago, the shitty dividend paid out to the women who conform to Good White Girlhood.

“Heartbroken doesn’t even begin to describe it, but this isn’t over either and I’m going to continue to fight this.”

This is the first sentence Savanna Batten, one of the nine defendants who was convicted in the North Texas “antifa” case for participating in a noise demonstration at the Prairieland Detention Center on July 4, 2025, sent me via the jail messaging system two days after the verdict. On March 14, I was awoken a little after 4 a.m. in Tokyo, Japan by a text message from Chris Tolbert, Savanna’s federal attorney who I was a paralegal for when a verdict had been reached. I was 14 hours ahead and I jumped out of my bed, my heart racing as I waited for an update. Less than an hour later, the numbness kicked in as uncontrollable crying overcame me. Tolbert’s words to me: We lost. Savanna had been found guilty of all four counts: riot, providing material support to terrorists, conspiracy to use and carry an explosive, and use and carry of an explosive.During the trial, the majority of evidence presented by the U.S. government focused primarily on political paraphernalia and firearms in an open carry state found in the homes of defendants and labeling black clothing as “tactical gear” to criminalize their character in the eyes of the jury. Their narrative seemed far-fetched to portray a noise demonstration as a “coordinated attack.”

On my last day at the trial on March 4, she looked at me withholding tears and, in that moment, I yearned to give her a hug. She called me that evening on my rainy drive back home to Dallas to say goodbye as I vowed to stay in touch. The first time I saw Savanna before July 4, 2025, was in early June 2025 providing jail support for detained protestors at Dallas County Jail after an anti-ICE protest in Dallas. Less than a year later, I never thought I would become a part of her legal team visiting her at the Wichita County Jail in December 2025. She remembered me, and from then on, a friendship bloomed beyond the jail walls.
