Never forget:
A google search for 'are there snakes at thesis defenses', with an AI overview that starts 'Yes, some universities have a tradition of including a "snake fight" portion in thesis defenses." and then goes on to give details just lifted from the McSweeney's article.

A class at my kids’ school put up little statements about the good they want to do in the world and I was over the moon about this one - then I learned they meant to say “teach people in jail” which is also good!

It's no secret nonfiction book writing is hard, and there are few places to learn how to do it. If, like I was, you are terrified of writing your first book, this might provide some guidance and encouragement. I enrolled to see what I can learn too!

One of my main goals as an author is to sell enough books so they'll let me write another one. Currently, it looks like that's not going to happen since my publisher is not happy with the sales of my second book. A sophomore slump. I'm open to promo ideas & would appreciate any shares of this post!

Rudist bivalves! These were apparently the tribbles of Cretaceous reefs. The vase-shaped mollusks with lids appear only in the late Jurassic, take over reef-building in the Cretaceous, and then utterly disappear when the asteroid hits. 🤯 Amazing!

We used to only know Promachoteuthis sulcus from a single specimen that looked like it had a creepy, tooth smile. (It's actually folded, circular lips) But recently we saw the first Promachoteuthis live in the wild, and its so pretty! I'm sorry we thought you were a creep!
Oral view of brachial crown of Promachoteuthis sulcus, holotype. The squid seems to have a set of dentures. The "dentures" are the circular, folded lips, of which only the upper and lower portions can be seen. The lips surround the beaks which are not visible in this photograph.A live Promachoteuthis sulcus floating in the sea. It is pointing vertically on a slight tilt. It has a translucent white colour, except for most of its limbs and eyes which are a dark red. Its red limbs are hanging downward, but it has two white limbs that are pointing out and forming an upside down V shape. You can vaguely see organs in its mantle but it is like looking through frosted glass.
