My youngest son's bestie randomly stopped by, and he came in hot, talking about how important Ant-Man and Wasp are to the Avengers and how they should have been in the first movie. "They are on the cover of the first issue!" Yup! I love that he turns to me to have his comic opinions validated. 😂

Alien Encounters #4 Contains Gardner Fox's last published comic story ✅
John Bolton's cover for Alien Encounters #4, showing a woman in a retrofuturistic yellow space suit shooting red robots.
I really like seeing an "On The Racks." The blurb for this issue features Gardner Fox! It is also nice to see an index and, fellow Gardner Fox scholar, Michael T. Gilbert's Mr. Monster no. 4 on the list. Opening panel for "Wish Upon a Jewel," showing a lone space man on a ship that is out of fuel and food, who has just come upon a yet undiscovered planet.

For all my complaints, there is a lot to love about Lanterns. The thing I love most is the way it made my youngest son realize just how many Green Lantern fans there are out there. He thought his love was far more isolated given the lack in our cultural milieu.

*Spoilers for Lanterns* . . . . If you strip away the critique that we didn’t get enough aliens/constructs, we’re left with a story where the supposed hero is okay with torture and his call to action is maybe having to snipe a kid one day. And all the hugs at the end?? The finale ruined the season.

I'm mostly with you. The fact that the only fun/superfluous construct we see Hal make is a bottle opener tells us a lot about his character. And the bubbles etc. work given the circumstances/their constraints as a live action tv show. That said, their lack does impinge on what GL usually delivers. 🤷

Side note: While I feel I can't fully judge Lanterns without seeing the last episode, and I have been enjoying it for what it is, same, Alan. Same. And we haven't even gotten a big green boxing glove! So much of the fun behind Green Lantern is what they can do with the constructs. I want more fun!
Panel showing Green Lantern saying "Sometimes I just get a little tired of the big green boxing glove!" after the previous panel had him making a big green hockey stick for a "slapshot."

Emil Ferris' Free Comic Book Day cover for "Our Favorite Thing Is My Favorite Thing Is Monsters." (Fantagraphics 2019) A mostly blank page with purple framing. "You can draw your very own protector monster right here!" is written along the top of the frame, with two more panels at the bottom. The first shows Emil Ferris saying, "Remember that YOU are the creator of your own protector monster and that means that ONLY YOU know your monster's deepest feelings and special story..." "... keep imagining and drawing amazing things because..." in word balloons. The bottom panel makes up the bottom of the frame and reads, "... You really can use your imagination to make the world a better place!"

Witchblood #2 Lisa Sterle and Matthew Erman ✅ Tarot card cover ✅ Shout outs to letterer Jim Campbell and colorer Gab Contreras too. Great stuff all around. I love the suggestion to play a song. And Lisa Sterle's art always leaves me feeling impressed.
Lisa Sterle's Tarot Cover for Witchblood #2 (Vault), featuring the lead vampiric villain on a throne with blood pouring down from above neatly in his hand and his foot on a skull.

• Writer: Matthew Erman
• Artist & Cover A: Lisa Sterle
• Colorist: Gab Contreras
• Letterer: Jim CampbellPanel suggesting the reader play the song Chattahoochee before turning the page. Lisa Sterle's mesmerizing work. You can see the silhouette of a woman with glowing eyes and wavy hair. In the same ink color and connected to her body are flowers, mushrooms, and other natural-looking shapes. There is watercolor green surrounding the figure with purple around the edges of the panel. The image is somehow graceful and beautiful while also feeling creepy and decaying.
