Somehow I'd never heard the song "Wichita Lineman" before, and now it's stuck in my head. But I love what its writer, Jimmy Webb, said about composing it:

Mercutio, by @kateheartfield.com, is so wonderfully weird! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The book somehow manages to effortlessly weave historical events and some of the world's best, most magical stories into something beautiful and terrifying but strangely plausible. I am so happy that I picked this one up! 📚🙂

Okay, here's my hot take: I've tried watching two separate highly rated Breaking Bad episodes and I found them histrionic and morally obvious. (A stuffed animal in the swimming pool? Really?). I'm not sure what you all see in it. I love Mad Men, though, and someday I want to watch The Wire.

Note: NYC residents only. Also, they really mean _never_, apparently. I haven't checked out the form yet but I've been to the opera, including the Metropolitan, and from what people are saying, that would disqualify me even though it was like 35 years ago. Still a great thing! Go!

Queries that I'm interested in right now: 1. Stories about relationships. Friendship or romance, don't care. 2. Sci-fi, especially optimistic sci-fi. Can you send me something about a non-dystopic future? Please?

Some thoughts on queries I tend to reject (and note, these are all very personal biases): 1. Stories set in the afterlife. I find it's very hard to determine what the stakes are. 2. Stories about royalty. 3. Stories about assassins. 4. Stories set in grad school. (more to come, I'm sure)

The whole story about Ken Paxton, the stolen Mont Blanc pen, and a courthouse videotape, is just one wonderful detail after another. Here you go:
Related Texas comptroller-elect shuffles personnel, promises accurate state revenue estimate

AUSTIN - In the great pen caper, Texas' incoming Attorney General Ken Paxton drew a Blanc. It happened last year at a Collin County courthouse, where lawyer Joe Joplin rushed through the security stop, needing to get to a hearing. A few hours later, he realized he'd left a tray of three pens at the metal detector. One was a gift from his wife — a $1,000 Montblanc. Mon Dieu. "It came back like a Kodak moment. I knew I'd put it in a separate bin and that second plate didn't come out," Joplin recalled in a recent interview. He rushed to the security entrance and the pen was gone. Joplin talked to the sheriff's deputies, who told him that shortly after Joplin went through, another man picked up a tray of pens on top of the machine. Joplin said he's not into fancy pens, but it had sentimental value. He asked about security cameras and whether he might view the tape. The deputies were unable to help. Joplin, frustrated and a bit frightened of telling his wife, wrote to an old friend, "just to vent." The boyhood pal was Collin County Sheriff Terry Box. In an Aug. 14, 2013, email, Joplin recounted the details. "The loss of my pen is my responsibility," he wrote, but he also thought a lost and found procedure might be instituted.Box is a sheriff who likes to see lost items returned. He ordered up the videotape. On the security video, the sheriff said he saw several people go through the machine after Joplin. And then he recognized the guy who picked up the pens — state Sen. Ken Paxton of McKinney. "It looked like he took a pen and put it in his pocket out of the tray," Box said. He asked a deputy to call Paxton and see whether he had it. He looked. He did. A day or so later, Paxton gave the pricey rollerball pen to a deputy to return to Joplin, the sheriff said. Paxton spokesman Anthony Holm called it a simple mistake. "Fifteen months ago a pen or pens was shuffled between two attorneys in a courthouse. This is far from newsworthy, as the pen was returned when the error was realized," Holm said. Joplin said he — and his wife — welcomed it back. "I don't want to cause anyone any harm. I was very grateful," he said. He declined to speculate on what might have happened. "You can surmise that," Joplin said.

Thanks for all the conversation is response to this post. I write in many registers for many audiences, including at my day job, but if you ever want to read a book that is me just using the words I want to use, it's Mercutio. If you like that sort of thing.
Chapter 1: What fray was here?
Steady, now. A line of men on horseback stretches across the dry valley. Mail reflects a grey sky. Pennants hang limp. The horses in their bright caparisons are patient.
Mercutio, with his borrowed helm under his arm, wants to get on with things. His horse, too, is borrowed. Unbedecked, because Mercutio is not worth the money. The mail is borrowed, and the sword, and the surcoat with his father’s family arms. The minimum required for a citizen soldier of Florence. All of it provided begrudgingly by his uncle, who could not fail to equip the prodigal nephew who arrived on his doorstep three months ago and declared himself ready to restore his parents’ honour.
By which Mercutio meant: fortune.
To fight, his uncle asked?
By which he meant: to die.
In this summer of the year 1289, Florence is at war, as usual. Locked in a constant struggle of raids and sieges against the towns and families who support the Holy Roman Empire’s claims in Italy. The Republic of Florence says it does not need an emperor, and neither does Siena, or Lucca, or any of the other towns whose men are on God’s side of the field today.
