Any DoJ attorney who participates in this investigation should suffer professional and social shunning that makes it effectively impossible to continue to work as an attorney.

It's profoundly different to cover a U.S. president than state or local officials, and too, much harder to vent publicly if you're female. But if in my reporting days, if anyone from a police sergeant to the mayor of Baltimore told me, "Quiet, piggy," I'd immediately insist he go fuck himself.

it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions "Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"

Or Trump is a lifelong liar and propagandist who doesn't care if he's caught because he knows he won't be punished. Trump is not the admin's main ideologue, but the idea that he's brainwashed instead of flagrantly lying is bizarrely generous. Flagrant lying showcases power. He's always done it.

We've had fuckups in the White House before, but never a president who seemed so deliberately intent on being a fuckup. It's been said before, but if these people were actual agents of an enemy power seeking to divide, dismantle and destroy the USA they wouldn't be doing anything different.

Many media outlets hid the full truth of Trump -- his background in organized crime, his Epstein ties -- out of fear, only to be obliterated by him in the end. Had they not self-censored then, they might not be state-censored now. When you hide the truth, you face the consequences.

A commenter on my essay on the age of alt-weeklies left this comment from "This Woman Votes," which states my premise so much more powerfully than I could--in the fight against fascism, the urgency of stories that linger--that I added it to the post. slowcivilwar.substack.com/p/the-longfo...
The death of alt-weeklies didn’t just kill a publishing model; it gutted the last public square where curiosity had the right of way. The corporate dailies sanitized the world until it smelled like hotel disinfectant, and the internet finished the job by selling off the bones to Craigslist and Google. What we lost wasn’t just longform stories about drag queens, roller rinks, and shady bail bondsmen — we lost the habit of lingering, of sitting with the mess of reality until it revealed something worth knowing.

Now, every damn thing is a “take.” Condensed. Opinionized. Algorithm-flattened until all that’s left is rage bait and a comment section war over scraps. Fascism thrives in that emptiness because it offers certainty where there should be questions, discipline where there should be curiosity. Alt-weeklies were graffiti against the blank wall of capital’s sterilized “redevelopment” projects. They taught people to ask: Who benefits? Who gets erased? And what’s hiding in plain sight?

That isn’t nostalgia, it’s strategy. If you want to fight authoritarianism, you need more than slogans. You need the peculiar, meandering, hyper-specific stories about the oddball texture of life - the very stuff the right wants to scrub out with power-wash morality. The long form of lingering wasn’t a luxury. It was democracy in print.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.
