Two of the wild horses of Sable Island - a stallion and a mare - share a quiet moment together. #photography #wildhorses
In this black and white image, we have a close-up of two horses with very shaggy manes and forelocks facing each other with their faces very close together. On the left, the stallion has a blaze and a gentle expression, and on the right the mare points her ears towards him. The background is the sky showing white in the monochrome.

This gal is one of the Shawnee Creek herd members in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, chilling along the banks of the Current River on a summer day. #photography #wildhorses
In this summer scene, a white-gray mare with a pink mottled muzzle, some dirt in her coat, and a couple of very long wind knots in her mane is standing next to a riverbank. She is in a grassy meadow and across the river we see an oak and hemlock forest. A little bit of mist rises off the water next to a sandbar.

A winter evening along Sabino Creek in Sabino Canyon #photography
Cottonwoods in fall colors flank this rocky creek bed in a deep canyon, in evening shadowy light. A very large boulder occupies the center-right of this vertically oriented image, and we can see the tops of the canyon walls under a darkening blue sky at the top of the image.

In Theodore Roosevelt National Park one summer morning, Arrowhead's band stands together on this ridge to catch the breeze and swish flies together. #photography #wildhorses
Six horses in a range of roan and gray colors stand close together atop a grassy ridge, generally facing left to right in the frame, under a light blue sky with wispy clouds. We can see their names and tails lifting in the wind.

In the Heber herd in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, a stallion checks in with one of the smaller members of his band. #photography #wildhorses
We have a head and shoulders view of a buckskin stallion wearing his fuzzy winter coat, facing left to right in the frame as he arches his head slightly to snuffle at the muddle of a chestnut foal. The foal has a blaze and is looking with affection and curiosity towards the stallion as their noses approach touching together. The background is out of focus pine and pinyon-juniper forest.

The McCullough Peaks wild horses treated me to this moment that somehow always reminds me of a Rosa Bonheur painting.
In this black and white image, a band of wild horses travels across some flat ground under a sky full of fluffy cumulus clouds. As the move left to right in the frame, a gray stallion in the back of the group rears on his hind legs as he urges the group forward. Dust kicks up under their feet.

Eclipse of the Onaqui herd is a real cutie. #photography #wildhorses
A black horse with a blaze walks across a flat of short brown grasses under a light blue sky with a few clouds. We can see a mountain ridge in the far background. The stallion is moving on an oblique towards the lower right corner of the image. His forelock is covering a black spot at the top of his blaze. Here the same black horse is walking right to left in the frame, across the dry ground, the brown of a mountain ridge rising behind him. There is also a gray horse grazing in his background. His coat is covered in dried mud from a roll in the water hole.

A snuggly moment with mom (and probably dad) in the Salt Wells Creek herd #photography #wildhorses
Looking uphill, we see a palomino foal snuggled up against his palomino mom, who is wrapping her neck around the head and neck of her foal in a horse hug. Behind them is a smoky buckskin stallion. Their setting is a hilltop covered in sagebrush and grass under a bright blue sky with a few streaks of clouds.

A compact looking chestnut stallion walks across winter-dry ground and short grass, with a background dotted with pinyon-juniper, and an out of focus grazing bay horse. The stallion has a blaze and is walking purposefully left to right in the frame, crossing an existing trail formed by horses walking routine routes. This is just a closer-up zoomed-in image of the stallion, capturing his head, shoulders, forelegs, barrel as he continues his march across the frame.

A Sable Island stallion is working HARD to shift his mares away from the gaze of another stallion, he was so frustrated and finally lit a fire under them to move. #photography #wildhorses
Three dark bay horses gallop side by side, one slightly trailing after the other, across a landscape of a grassy dune. The image is zoomed in close and the horses travel left to right in the frame.Just half a stride later, as the mare in the lead has stretched her left front hoof out, reaching for the next step. Their manes fly in the air behind. We can make out that the stallion in the rear has his ears pinned.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

For Foal Friday, a scene from Lost Creek, from my visit a couple years ago. The BLM has scheduled a roundup/removal for the Red Desert complex, of which Lost Creek is one of the HMAs. These beauties are probably going to lose their freedom. #photography #wildhorses
Against the backdrop of a vivid and somewhat stormy sky, a dark gray stallion is herding a young mare, her foal, and her yearling from right to left in the frame. The yearling's and foal's mouths are open as they champ their teeth to say "we're just babies, be gentle!" while the mare trots with one eye on her kids.A moment or two later, as the stallion continues driving the mare and her foal and yearling forward.

A pretty bay mare in the Little Book Cliffs range, with a view of the beautiful landscape there #photography #wildhorses
Smallish in the frame, a sleek bay mare steps down a short steep slope to a creek bed which is mostly just out of the frame to the left. She is surrounded by sagebrush and sparse grasses and rocks, and in the background we see the walls of a long cliff rising above the scene. The bay mare steps closer to the little creek with its rocky bed, which flows through the lower-middle of the image; she is approaching from the right side of the frame and we can see the small star marking on her face. Here we zoom out again to see more of a rocky foreground as the mare steps across the creek, the wall of the cliff in the backgroundComing in closer again as the mare steps purposefully across the creek, a large boulder in the foreground.

The Sand Wash Basin roundup/removal is starting this week, focusing first as I understand it on the out of bounds bands who live outside of the boundary fence. #photography #wildhorses
A dark gray mare stands close together with a dun stallion, facing generally left to right in the frame, among grass and sagebrush. A fence made of wire and vertical wooden slats is seen just behind them, entering the image from the left edge, and the sky is a clear light blue.Zooming out, the fence is in the lower left foreground, extending towards the upper right corner of the image. The mare and stallion of the previous image are standing to the right of the fence, while on the other side of the fence a band of about 5 horses are variously grazing or looking towards the mare-stallion pair. From this angle we can see a distant low mountain ridge in the background.

The current configuration of Assateague Island's state line band: half sisters Coco and Sapphire, and stallion Foxy's Gift. I met up with them on this very very buggy summer day. Poor Coco was getting hit the worst with the deer flies. #photography #wildhorses

The bay is looking cheerful while the buckskin looks vaguely miserable with the biting flies. The buckskin mare leads the bay mare on a walk along the beach surf, with a chestnut pony stallion following a few lengths behind the bay mare. The three ponies have stopped to stand right by the shallow water of the surf, swishing flies. This is a wider angle show that shows a tongue of ocean water sloshing up towards their feet. The buckskin mare, Coco, walks purposefully along the surf, absolutely covered in biting deer flies.
