Spent some time in rural Nebraska as a writer-in-residence at KHN Center for the Arts and came away feeling renewed, focused, and excited about the work again. (Also saw some pretty great sunsets and ate my body weight in pie.) Thanks for everything, KHN! #khncenterforthearts

Oh hey, we also went yesterday! The butter sculptures in the Dairy Barn are always fun (very patriotic this year, but usually more interesting/random, like “butter moon landing,” “butter inventor of the vacuum cleaner,” etc). That cable car thing you can ride across the fair is also a good time

“I felt thrust into another world—and it wasn’t just money, it was milieu. It was a certain register they could hit when they talked or wrote that I just couldn’t. And they had a confidence that comes from having few material concerns, this idea that the ground would always be there to meet them.”

Your reminder that fairy tales are full of stepmothers because women once routinely died in childbirth, from postpartum sepsis, or from other infectious diseases and left behind housefuls of motherless children. Stable nuclear families are made possible by vaccines, antibiotics, and safe abortions.
