In light of some magazines pulling scummy things on creators lately, I’m doing a little thread on short story rights. I don't want anybody getting taken advantage of. Also, if you're new, this stuff can be confusing!

I have legitimately thought about learning witchcraft to cast a hex in favor of It Happening. I know that hexes rebound onto the caster and I don’t. Fucking. Care.

I think my goal for this first week of #FirstDraftFall is "try not to lose my goddamn mind." (Seriously, this week involves All the Things so it's highly unlikely I'll get much planning done.)

My autumn body looks suspiciously similar to my summer body, but ever so slightly paler. I'm beginning to suspect they might be... the same body?

I'll start out with some general ideas about the character, but part of the exploratory outline is discovering what I need to know about them to understand why they would make the choices/decisions I have them make. Whatever gets me that knowledge! #WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall

Another tactic I've used came from Matt Bell, where I write an *extensive* outline that's essentially a "half draft." I did that for my last two WIPs. In one case the outline was over 50 pages long. I felt like I really knew where I was going with that one. #WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall

For longer works, I've done one of two things. I start an exploratory first draft and pause to plan once I've got enough of a feel for it, so I can figure out where it's going. #WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall

I tend to work on standalones that contain a kernel of connectivity. So, most of them take place in St. Louis, characters from one book or story pop up in another, and really everything’s connected. #WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall
