Back when Twitter was not terrible, I was fortunate enough to be the person who first told Buzz Bissinger about Bobby Bonilla Day, and he thought it was so funny that he, unbidden, sent me a signed copy of Friday Night Lights

I really do love a red-shouldered hawk. Not just because they're beautiful, and not even just because we've had a nesting pair for years--but because when I started working from home in covid, this one (last photo) is what made me pick up my wife's camera and snap a shot. 60,000 frames later... 😂

In 2014 the DirecTV blimp was moored at the municipal airport just over yonder. I took a photo of my kids (5 and 3) admiring it and tweeted at them, jokingly asking for a ride. To my great surprise they obliged! Very neat.

I actually forgot that this bookcase also holds a copy of "Myron T. Herrick, Friend of France." It's an "autobiographical biography" written by a diplomat colleague, based in part on stories Myron had told over the years.

I'm actually a little surprised to discover that I don't have any photos of the bookcase in my grandparents' house. That house, by the way, was originally built in 1845--which means it was a contemporary of G.E., though he lived about 20 miles to the west. It was expanded many times over the years.
100
Jeff Nye @jeffreynye.org · 28/06/2026
The house is long gone, but the Western Reserve Historical Society has a photo from the parlor of the "Herrick Mansion." I wish I knew what some of the things in this photo were, especially the art, and I wonder what happened to them.

Jeff Nye @jeffreynye.org · 28/06/2026
(G.E. and Myron were rough contemporaries and lived in CLE at the same time, but they weren't especially close on the consanguinity table, and Myron isn't my ancestor. But my mom's maiden name is Herrick, so my dad and brothers and I were sure to get a photo on the Paris street that bears his name.)

Jeff Nye @jeffreynye.org · 28/06/2026
One of G.E.'s cousins was Myron T. Herrick III, the American ambassador to France who is remembered today for (among other things) having received Charles Lindbergh--and lending him a suit--when he landed in Paris in 1927

an excerpt from a recent article at Cincinnati.com authored by Laura Bischoff about outgoing Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, who is resigning his elected position as Ohio's top legal officer to join Alliance Defending Freedom. The excerpt reads as follows:

"I've been passionate about religious liberty, free speech, parental rights and human dignity for a long time, and to now bring my legal and advocacy skills to bear alongside the best constitutional lawyers in the world is an extraordinary opportunity," Yost said in the release.

Alliance Defending Freedom has fought against transgender rights and advocated for private school vouchers and wedding industry businesses that deny same-sex couples services. The group was instrumental in overturning the landmark abortion decision Roe v. Wade.

Yost will stop down effective June 7, according to the governor's office.

Actually, I just remembered that an earlier article reporting on the move had an even better passage, contrasting the ADF's track record with Yost's quote lauding it:

Donathan argue that Klosterman’s claims are barred by the Rooker-Feldman doctrine. (Doc. 53
at PageID 516–517; Doc. 54 at PageID 529–531; Doc. 55-1 at PageID 783–785.) The Rooker-
Feldman doctrine precludes lower federal courts “from exercising appellate jurisdiction over
final state-court judgments.” Lance v. Dennis, 546 U.S. 459, 463 (2006). The doctrine also
prohibits district courts from exercising jurisdiction over interlocutory state court judgments, see
RLR Invs., LLC v. City of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., 4 F.4th 380, 396 (6th Cir. 2021), and claims that
are “inextricably intertwined with issues decided in state court opinions[,]” Exec. Arts Studio,
Inc. v. City of Grand Rapids, 391 F.3d 783, 793 (6th Cir. 2004) (internal quotation and citation
omitted). “A federal claim is inextricably intertwined with a state court judgment and thus
implicates Rooker-Feldman when the federal claim succeeds only to the extent that the state
court wrongly decided the issues before it.” Exec. Arts Studio, Inc., 391 F.3d at 793 (internal
quotation and citation omitted). Put differently, Rooker-Feldman applies if “the source of the
plaintiff’s injury is the state-court judgment itself.” Kost v. Hoseth Kreeger, 832 F. App’x 438,
439 (6th Cir. 2021).
Defendants argue that Rooker-Feldman precludes this Court from exercising jurisdiction
over the Amended Complaint because the gravamen of Klosterman’s claims is that Defendants
conspired to use a court-appointed receivership to wrongfully deprive him of properties worth
more than $4.5 million. Klosterman does not meaningfully respond to their arguments—he only
asserts in conclusory fashion that Rooker-Feldman does not apply when Defendants commit
crimes in state court proceedings. (Doc. 59 at PageID 1360.)7 As explained immediately below,
7 Although Klosterman has not clearly asserted the issue nor provided legal analysis on it, the Court notes that the
extrinsic fraud exception to Rooker-Feldman does not apply. There is an exception to the…

Interesting. Here in Ohio our Rule 41 differs from the federal rule in that a plaintiff can voluntarily dismiss even after an answer or MSJ. The rule here is that "a plaintiff has an absolute right, regardless of motive" to one dismissal without prejudice. www.supremecourt.ohio.gov/rod/docs/pdf...
{¶22} Pursuant to Civ.R. 41(A)(1)(a), a plaintiff has an absolute right, regardless of motive, to one voluntary, unilateral termination of the plaintiff's case without prejudice at any time prior to the commencement of trial, unless a counterclaim which cannot remain pending for independent adjudication has been served by the defendant. Voluntary dismissal requires neither notice to the opposing party nor leave of court. Clay Hyder Trucking Lines, Inc. v. Riley (1984), 16 Ohio App.3d 224; Holly v. Osleisek (1988), 40 Ohio App.3d 90.
