NP has some charm here and there. But yeah, Mineral Springs and the land of infinite gas stations undermines much of it. I'm glad I live on the Prov. side of the border. It's unbalanced. Shore's Market is awesome, but there should be other grocery options along MS.

Tell me more about topiary? Green Animals is my favorite mansion and I've got some arbor vitae that I would love to turn into giraffes or something. But I fear I would botch it.

I think that one of the coolest things about librarians is that after 9/11 when the government started demanding patron records, many librarians simply stopped recording your book history. It's like evading a charging bull by just taking a step to the side.

You reach the Gates of Hades & find them guarded by this: (📷: USFWS)
Spooky Season has officially begun, and we’re kicking things off with a three-headed ferret.

OK, technically it’s three black-footed ferrets, but October calls for a little imagination.

Once thought to be extinct, black-footed ferrets are one of North America’s rarest mammals. At the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center, staff work to breed and recover these endangered little creatures and return them to the wild.

Cute? Absolutely. Three-headed monster? Only in October.

OTD in 1838, Charles Darwin read Malthus’s Principles of Population “for amusement.” The idea of a “war of nature” was venerable, but D realized that such a war would tend to remove deleterious variations from populations. Natural selection would necessarily follow. 🌱🐋🧪#HistSTM #philsci 📈📉#evolbio

Colleges need to teach people to read books, apparently. I enjoy helping people grow and realize their dreams and take their next steps. That obviously means “meeting them where they are,” a mantra now said so often as to be bordering on the cliché. But how we let it come to this is disconcerting.

If you forget, you will make Roger Williams sad.
This is not Roger Williams. It is Samuel Chapin. Nobody knows what Roger Williams looked like. Actually, it's probably a statue of one of Samuel's grand-nephews since nobody knew what Samuel looked like either. Post-mortem, Roger Williams looks like a tree root, but that's a whole other thing...https://www.rihs.org/collection_item/roger-williams-apple-tree-root/

I kinda get why people hate on fussy philosophical stuff, but on the other hand don't you think we live in a time where it'd be especially helpful to have rigorous conversations about things like personhood, meaning in life, the point of art, the point of pure mathematics, & operationalizing ethics?

Yup - and @mazdausa.bsky.social nailed it. The screen in my generation is small and sits high on the dash in my line of sight. It's operated by a joystick so there is tactile feedback. And most controls have buttons and switches. But the new version is a tesla wannabe.

Jeffrey M @jeffreymphd.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The @mazdausa.bsky.social reddit forums hate that a new model has only a touch screen. After the company boasted for years that tactile switches are safer and have a more premium feel. OFC now the company claims that everything on a single screen is safer and more premium.🙃
