That does make sense. I'll have a proper look at some point, thank you. I still don't trust that a weakening stance on nuclear power won't be taken advantage of by bad actors or allow lies about 'base load' necessity to spread, but hopefully it's not as bad as the Guardian article suggests.

I'm just going by the Guardian article (which, admittedly, is not usually wise). You probably have a better understanding than me. I am always worried that these allowances can escalate once the hard line is revoked. I'm not sure who I'd trust to push back enough against nuclear power lobbyists.

Denyer said keeping existing nuclear stations running could be a low-carbon option because a significant proportion of their carbon footprint came from construction. “So if I were energy secretary, my evidence-based approach would be to keep existing nuclear plants in operation, but to consider proposals for new nuclear power very carefully, bearing in mind the cost, speed and environmental impacts.”

I can see an argument for not prioritising closing nuclear plants over fossil plants. Climate collapse is here right now. But this motion goes further than that and even allows for the construction of new plants, as well as resurrecting nonsense discussions about 'nuclear baseload'. Really bad. 😟

Supremely disappointing. There is no way to safely store nuclear waste for thousands of years, and it's already being horrifically mismanaged. Future generations should not inherit this burden. There's no guarantee they'll even know where it's stored in 100 years, let alone a thousand.

I don't agree. There is no way to make nuclear waste safe, and creating more of it leaves future generations with a burden they'll have to manage for thousands of years. Even now it's not being managed properly and is at constant risk of leaking into groundwater.

The motion explicitly calls for 'equality for all' in the democratic state that's built. No one is being wiped out, relocated, purged, or anything like that. It's called a Palestinian state because it is in Palestine. It does not say that Israel should be ethnically cleansed.

It's condemning a philosophy that demands the perpetuation of a segregationist, expansionist ethnostate. The region doesn't have to be configured that way. Changing things doesn't have to involve wiping anyone out. Leaving it as it is, however, is wiping people out.

I don't know how that can possibly be achieved given that Israel is in the process of assimilating Palestinian territories right now. Frankly, I don't know how either option can be done. But I think it is a mistake to believe a two state solution is any more possible than one, let alone desirable.

I think you're correct that it's the media focus. Green Party policy is broadly popular with the electorate but not with established business interests, so it serves the interest of the media to focus on topics they believe are contentious.

If you get your information directly from the party I think you'll see a big difference. Most of the campaign emails I receive and a large chunk of the party's social media output is about climate and the environment.

Situations like this do make me despair sometimes. The MSM are never going to reward us when we stand up for our principles, and it feels like self-sabotage. But I believe the alternative - letting principles slip for convenience - is a big part of why the last few decades have been so awful. 😟

I wasn't comparing like for like. Some people, like Caroline Lucas, are saying that Zionism is too complicated to be condemned in policy like this. I was just illustrating that policies do not exist in isolation even within the same subject area. That's why we have more than one.

We have policy that deals with helping people replace gas boilers. That policy is really important to make sure vulnerable people don't suffer in the cold. Similarly, we have policy recognising and unilaterally condemning antisemitism. It's necessarily compatible with recognising Zionism as racism.

A lot of the negative response I've seen seems to be 'yes, Zionism is racism, but...' I just want to point out that this policy does not exist in isolation. None of the party policy does! As a parallel, we could say: 'Yes, fossil fuels are bad, but what about people with gas boilers?'

The Green Party approach to ending dependence on fossil fuels includes explicit requirements that everyone will be cared for & supplied with alternative means to live comfortably. Just as the Green Party is explicitly committed to ending both the inherent racism of Zionism as well as antisemitism.

I don't agree that the motion oversimplifies things. We often talk about the need to immediately end dependence on fossil fuels. Nobody argues that fossil fuels are "dangerous and a response to danger" by arguing that gas is needed to stop people freezing in dangerously cold conditions.

It's amazing where you can find chickweed if you look. Thriving at the top of an old tree trunk! A good place to disperse seeds I suppose. It's the big sort that goes all angular when it seeds. I should probably learn the proper names at some point. 😅
