I totally get it! What struck me on a re-read is how clumsy the many self-inserts were but how fucking sophisticated the shifting POVs and multiple characters were. Most young writers—when they’re not bombing on both counts—tend to get the first one handled and blow the second.

One of the things I love about Salem’s Lot is how it’s the most “writer’s first novel that got published second” of all time. Like, Jay McInerney’s Ransom tried to challenge it for the title, and Salem’s Lot kicked its ass in the parking lot so bad people don’t even mention it anymore.

This was a great review—succinctly sums up the arguments of the book that it’s reviewing; explains why those arguments are important; transmits the excitement at encountering and engaging with those arguments. And since it’s about the state of publishing today, I hope writers on here read it.

Sorry for your loss. Being old has its rewards, but it’s hard to explain to the young how it hurts to learn someone you thought was just out of your sightline making the world brighter has been gone for decades and you were deeply mistaken. It’s an extra bit of salt to the wound.

As a dude with a day job that requires him to interact with the IT Department, I gotta say Adam is 100% on point here. IT has to reconcile complex interdependencies in different software so workers can just work and the support framework of the software makes that possible.

RIP, Matt Howarth. He was a true original—I most loved his chaotic Bugtown material where SF New Wave met real New Wave musicians: gloriously amok. My single published comic work featured Cthulhu as a rock musician—no need to guess where that idea came from! His work meant a lot to me.
