8/ To be exact: every hop is encrypted, and I'm not saying anything leaked. I'm saying the government's description of this system and the government's code say opposite things. I've asked GSA which one is true: github.com/18F/identity-idp/issues/13555 Which answer would you bet on?

7/ Delete your account? The cleanup deletes your verification history and leaves the photos. The photo files have random names and nothing in the app knows which are yours. The same file says, in a comment, that your sign-in history with IP addresses is kept after delete. On purpose, since 2020.
Ruby code from the User model. Line 33: has_many events, comment "we are retaining events after delete." Line 34: has_many devices, comment "we are retaining devices after delete."

6/ A second copy is built to go to GSA's own fraud database. A job there decrypts each record and keeps it 366 days: SSN, birthday, address, ID number, IP, device ID, and the keys to your photos. Public code too. github.com/18F/identity-reporting-rails/blob/main/config/pii_retention.yml
A YAML configuration file. retention_days is 366. Under schemas, fraudops, included_tables lists encrypted_events and decrypted_events.

5/ In June 2026 that became the rule on purpose. One switch now stores photos for every person who verifies, not just people headed to an agency on the feed. Whether that switch is on today lives in a private config. I can't see it. Neither can you. github.com/18F/identity-idp/pull/13233
Ruby code, lines 206 to 211 highlighted. A method named doc_escrow_enabled returns true when the doc escrow flag is on and either the historical attempts flag is on or the service provider has the attempts API enabled

4/ July 2025. The team merged a fix. Their words: "all Acuant proofing images were being saved to the s3 Bucket, rather than just images for the allowed service providers." For weeks, everyone's ID photos, not just IRS users'. No public notice I can find. github.com/18F/identity-idp/pull/12351
A GitHub pull request description. Under "Summary of changes" it reads: We had an incident with the Attempts API where all Acuant proofing images were being saved to the s3 Bucket, rather than just images for the allowed service providers

3/ The code, fifteen lines. Make a random key, encrypt your photo, save it to a GSA storage bucket under a random name, then put the key and file name in a record that goes to the partner agency's fraud feed. The report names one partner: the IRS.
Ruby code from login.gov's repository, lines 14 to 28 highlighted. A write method generates a random 32-byte encryption key, names the file encrypted_images slash a random UUID, encrypts the image, and returns the name and the base64 key.

2/ The report, March 10, 2026, page 12. Your ID photo and selfie: "Stored within Login.gov: No. Shared with Agency Partner: No." Footnote 22: "Once state-issued ID images have been processed for authenticity, Login.gov does not store them." gsa.gov/system/files/Login_PIA_(March_2026).pdf

1/ If you've ever verified your identity on login.gov (IRS, Social Security, VA), here's something I found this week. The government's signed privacy report says login.gov doesn't keep the photo of your license or your face. The public code keeps both. 🧵 #privacy #logingov #govtech

I hate AI slop. I also think someone can use AI to make something worth reading. I wrote about that tension, including why "they hated cameras too" is a lousy answer to artists worried about getting paid. jeffkazzee.substack.com/p/does-using...

Does using AI make the work worth less?
AI can change what work costs, how we judge it, and what we expect from the person making it.

Meet Applied Electrodynamics. They're building cameras that see through 'solid matter'. Specifically your walls. Drywall, brick, whatever. This is not anything that I support, this is yet another invasion of privacy, using radio waves, the sae way they see through your wifi but 10x.

Built a checker for my one writing rule yesterday. Found I'd never broken it, not once. Then pointed it at my READMEs and docs, where no rule applied. Failed immediately. Wasn't a discipline problem. My rule covered a small part of what I actually write. jeffkazzee.substack.com/p/my-writing...

4/ Secrets stay out: agents are told not to store credentials, and a deterministic gate redacts API keys / tokens / private keys from content + metadata before storage. Honest scope — real key formats, not "every secret."

3/ Trust model: every recall is traced (query, matches, scores), every correction is versioned, forgetting is reversible + audited, nothing is silently overwritten. Local inspect dashboard for all of it.

Don't ignore those things as they are existential. Celebrate the fight for actual freedom. This is bigger than the current political moment.

This is not an excuse for the greed as we have the first trillionaire while our poorest are going hungry, with less government support, while our homeless population grows larger and the frozen crew is kidnapping immigrants.

From the battle of blaire mountain to the suffrage movement and the just fighting of John Brown. the government has always been the antithesis of our greatness. That's the reality of our situation for the last 250 years, even before our founding. Keep the faith!

Jeff Kazzee @jeffkazzee.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
We are people who have stood up for the rights we believe in. Worker's rights. Suffrage. The end of slavery. (I am fully aware that the fight for true equality is not over, nowhere near.) We have so much to continue fighting for. Freedom isn't free, and history proves that.

Happy 250th! It might not feel like the normal 4'th, but there's something worth celebrating no matter how much you feel discouraged about the way things are. We have made progress the last 100 years, the government does not define what we are or who we are.
