people referring to the new battle type added in fire emblem fortune’s weave as “turn-based battles” is driving me up a wall. fire emblem gameplay is always turn-based!!!!!

the text log ui in new fire emblem is pretty neat! the way the currently displayed line just becomes the lowest item in the list once you open the text log is very slick (and kind of obvious in retrospect, and yet I can’t recall any other games using that approach)

Some personal news! After a ~4 year diversion in big tech, I’m back to the manga industry! I’m going to be leading UX and product management for VIZ’s digital platforms (SJ app, VIZ Manga app, and web)—I’m so excited to get to work on making manga as accessible and user-friendly as possible!

something I’ve been thinking about w/ iPhone Duo on the horizon—are there any apps that look truly great in *landscape* on iPad? even great iPad apps seem to treat landscape like an afterthought (eg video apps just resize portrait ui so that a banner takes up 80% of the screen)

Netflix on iPad, in portrait orientation. The top banner for “The Four Seasons” takes up about 1/3 of the screen, leaving two more rows (Mobile Games, Your Next Watch) almost fully visible on the screen.

Netflix on iPad, in landscape orientation. The top banner for “The Four Seasons” takes up about almost the entirety of the screen, leaving just the headline of one row (Mobile Games) and the contents of that row barely visible.

Disney+ on iPad, in portrait orientation. The top banner for “The Sompsons” takes up about 1/5 of the screen, leaving one tall row (Recommended For You) and one short row (Continue Watching) fully visible.

Disney+ on iPad, in landscape orientation. The top banner for “The Sompsons” takes up about the vast majority the screen, leaving the heading for one row (Recommended For You) visible, but so little of the tiles of that row are visible that it’s practically meaningless.

I’ve fallen extremely behind on jump manga in recent years. should I start catching up by going down the list in popularity order? 🤔

idk, I just think anyone who seriously thinks “this 500 page novel will probably be the first book many people read” is such an unprecedented level of egotism and delusion that it deserves to be studied

A tweet from MrBeast showing a picture of his novel, with this text:

Growing up I thought books were boring, in reality I just didn't read anything that actually interested me. Which is why I teamed up with James Patterson to write The Most Dangerous Games! For many people this might be the first book they actually read (and hopefully enjoy haha) give it a read and tell me what you think :D

so you’re telling me people see a character whose whole shtick is that their background as a holocaust survivor gave them a self-righteous justification to attempt genocide, and they think it would be more progressive to change their backstory to a different marginalized group? are we being serious?

don’t want to jinx it b/c nothing’s certain yet, but recently I’ve been prepping for a major career change. in some ways it feels terrifying (I’ve had the same type of job since college, software dev is a big part of my identity), but in other ways it feels like the most natural change in the world

been thinking lately about what recent examples of apps/sites I’d hold up as the gold standard of UI/UX design, and I was surprised to realize how extremely few things I can think of it feels like polish and delight is being squeezed out of everything more and more

I wonder how common it is to refer to people in a park as “park users” 🤔 does it predate the (now extremely commonplace) computery usage, or is it derived from it? obviously anyone who “uses” something is a “user”, but was it a common term before computers?

I hate that this is how I stumbled on it, but I saw this semi-viral tweet that included a chatgpt-generated image whose art style I really dig. I’m really curious to find some of the original work it plagiarized this style from. are there any particular artists that come to mind?

was rewatching the Darker Than Black OP, and my first thought was “oh, how quaint that they used to have to clarify that a website worked on mobile” but then I realized this OP (April 2007) predates the first iPhone (June 2007), so it’s referring to the pre-smartphone mobile web

every couple months I remember marc andreessen’s rant about “the deal” (that tech elites used to be able to make billions & everyone would adore them 100% uncritically as long as they donated a bit) and it makes me livid all over. that’s not a deal, that’s one side winning with 0 drawbacks!!!

How seriously do you take the “get to the airport as if the flight isn’t delayed” advice when you have 12+ hours notice of a delay?

baffled that I was able to land on these perfect names within a couple days (their rescue names were Tiny Tim and Lewis), but I’ve spent a month trying to think of a name for my new FFXIV character and I haven’t been able to think of anything aside from the same silly name I made 11 years ago

In Gilmore Girls 1x08 there’s a joke where someone tells Luke to go the USSR and he retorts “There is no more USSR, Harry” That episode was closer to the dissolution of the USSR (9 years prior) than we currently are to the Netflix revival season (10 years ago)
