An energy story: 4 years ago, I got a call from former Sec of Energy Jennifer Granholm (actually a VM — I was on a flight when she rang). With the news that I would receive the DOE Office of Science Lawrence Award. It was utterly unexpected.

Today was a good day. Each year in mid-April, I give one of my favorite lectures...at Berkeley High School's 9th grade Climate Conference. We talk about Farming Carbon, how rocks (minerals) + roots + microbes + water = soil. We go over how the earth system is changing...

EMSL-JGI meeting in Seattle was pretty great! (although I’ll be happy when we can stop talking nonstop about AI and just use it like any other tool). Best part by far was getting to see my dear friend and former postdoc Ashley Campbell.

The *Microbes Persist* project I lead is featured in LLNL’s new Science and Tech magazine. We’re trying to understand how genomes of tiny organisms control the creation & breakdown of soil organic matter— a critical ingredient in keeping our soils healthy and productive. str.llnl.gov/str-march-20...

Deep rooted perennial grasses—are they reliably benefitting soil #carbon persistence? We’ve got some new data on C,N, #radiocarbon, density fractions from the US Midwest and High Plains. Come discuss this afternoon! #AGU24 W/ #CABBI #LLNL Manisha Dolui @karis-mcfarlane.bsky.social

@allegramayer.bsky.social at #AGU24 showed the counter factual fate of #BiCRS feedstocks— v import info for #LCA. Processed products (eg char) produce a fair amt of N2O; less so in low pH soil. Gasification comes out best— w least GHG emissions

Heading to Laramie WY today for our last regional conversation about #roadstoremoval - our national, high resolution analysis of capacity and costs for #CDR. Will be one of the most interesting convos yet— given the state’s major interest in a new carbon economy and right-leaning political landscape

Twas a delight to have many friends & colleagues at my @ESPM_Berkeley Hans Jenny lecture, “The Music of Soil”. Big thanks to Victor Leshyk for this gorgeous visual metaphor. Too bad the sound clips didn’t play— but I guess my singing worked well enough!

I generally say ‘yes’ when I get the chance to do field work…spent the last 2 days helping BruceHungate & Ecoss (NAU) collect the last samples from a 22 year soil warming experiment. Big feels… & I’d rate this in the top 1% most beautiful field sites ever!!

We’re doing a little kitchen enviro science. Hypothesis is that no-till soil is more biodiverse. But Diversity is a tough one-you have a gut sense of it, but then Simpson or Shannon tell you different. You realize you can never sample enough. So we’re learning about soil heterogeneity the hard way.
