Beyond their ability is not a fixed statement. There is plenty of great material and people to learn from that most people can get there. They are just not incentivized enough (intrinsically or extrinsically) to go beyond “doing the best I can”.

I would imagine that it has a lot to do with the fact that they don’t believe the statement you made is true. Also, evaluating good management is even harder than evaluating good engineering. Creating an ecosystem for excellence is beyond their thinking or ability.

This stat seems pretty bad and really stark compared to other places www.pewresearch.org/religion/202...

% who rate the morality and ethics of people in their country as morally good or bad. US has the highest rate (53%) saying fellow citizens are morally bad.

Us humans too often enjoy the easy path. This is just another example where the easy path feels so powerful since you can turn out so many features quickly. I hope there are enough influencers in enough organizations to steer our industry into the simpler effective path instead of the easy path.

I often see people tempted to rely on what authority they have to force “progress” for their awesome idea. There are too many reasons why this almost never works. People often forget that ideas are the easy part.

An important part of professional growth is realizing being right doesn’t matter if you can’t get people to listen to you.

It’s 9am TFT time here, and citizens are already gathering to protest Tariffs by the United States. Our plain clothes Officer Penguins are attempting to maintain calm, but unfortunately we keep losing them in the crowd.

This is a good baseline indeed. I like surveying devs as another metric. I ask them to capture how they spent their time (their last work day) based on a few buckets. These buckets are either value generating or non value generating time. I find it a valuable measurement.

I like the breakdown. A good addition would be to document some high level guidance on choosing what a good mix of tests means for your team and code.

What a bizarre place that Canada will become when this man becomes our prime minister. I really hope I’m wrong about him winning the next election. Should I start farming crickets in case Trudeau pulls off the comeback?

I think this take hits it on the head. There are plenty of statements in my current feed that I don’t agree with. I have disagreed with people here more than on X in my final days there. X made disagreeing very difficult.

I do know some genuinely nice people that will vote for him. Mostly because they get a lot of their info from bad sources. Facebook has done some real damage to Canadian society.

This man will be the worst leader we have had in my lifetime. Perhaps Canada’s lifetime. He is destined to win with a strong majority. F Trudeau sticker guys are very excited for this man to lead us, that alone should give us nightmares.

Broadening horizons is more than just political. There are more productive conversations here than on X. When it comes to political, both extremes take up all the air on x. I was done with X either way, I’m glad Bluesky is here so I can leverage a good platform.

I would add that: there may be a way to pull off a great team that uses a pr approach. But they would be slow. It is much easier to build a great team without the pr code review process and get much better outcomes, including quality. Another benefit, it is a lot more fun and dynamic.

I prefer a post-commit review where the committer shares things that may be of interest to the team. We will quickly pass over the code they think is less interesting. I think this works best with 90 minutes a day of pairing. Small prs and test automation are important for this to work well.

Flying home on a Sunday morning is a nice way to travel for business. I need to remember this in the future. It is an extra day away from my family but it is nice to spend a Saturday in a distant place.

This is such a shame, but I guess I need to buy a good reading light for bed time. At least when my wife gets mad about my reading light, I can tell her that she needs to support authors and accept the light radiating from my reading. :)

I want to live in a world where authors can easily sell me their books in convenient forms, while the platform that makes it happen takes a reasonable convenience fee. Some say I am a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

Is this actually true? I have often said the same thing. It is definitely true when it comes to physical improvements or emotional growth. But what if you make your comfort zone an area where you are regularly learning and trying new things. Just thinking out loud.

I think the term “planning” has been used to create a lot of harm when it comes to developers and how they spend their time. I think planning in the best sense is incredibly important. Especially, when people are prepared to change plans based on shifting information.
