Day 8 of #31DaysOfGraves - Animal This is the lion at the foot a medieval knight's effigy located inside the early 19thC Ceres Church, Fife. The recumbent figure is in superb condition, having been discovered buried nearby. It offers a wonderful insight into the lost medieval church on this site.
A carved stone lion looks outwards towards the camera. Two carved armoured feet are using it as a footrest. This image shows the rear side of the carved stone lion, its head and shoulders covered in a luxurious mane.An image of the entire recumbent medieval knight, wearing armour and holding his hands clasped in prayer, both feet resting on the lion.

We had a wonderful time yesterday working with some amazing volunteers who joined us from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, local universities and a local church, along with a few of our own fabulous veteran church recorders, as we began to document St Margaret's Chapel in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh.
A group of people stand smiling on a the steps of a church with a red door behind themA picture of St Margaret's Chapel, part of the Gillis Centre in Edinburgh. It shows the church on a very sunny day (taken some weeks ago during the summer). A Gothic building, with four pinnacles and a small spire piercing the blue sky above.

Day 6 of #31DaysOfGraves - Weather This carving, on a Celtic cross in the Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh, depicts the funeral of Lt John Irving, a member of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition that disappeared while searching for the Northwest Passage in 1845. Lt Irving's body was discovered in 1879.
Stone base of a monument, showing a carved scene depicting two sailing ships trapped in ice, with a party of sailors in winter clothing performing a funeral on a rocky shore. Beneath the scene the Latin words "Decorum est pro patria mori" have been carved, translated as "It is sweet and fitting to die for one's country".

Great moments in Scottish engineering history: James Watt tries to work out how his phone attaches to his selfie stick.
Statue of James Watt. In his right hand he holds a telescopic stick with a frame at the top; in his left he holds a flat object about the size of a large smartphone. He is scowling at the possibly-not-a-smartphone as if he is tempted to yeet it into the sea. On that basis, it probably _is_ a phone.
