The next stage begins - waiting for the train at Brno 🇨🇿 to take me to Vienna 🇦🇹
A middle aged white man - me - at a station. There is a train in the blue and white livery of ČD, the Czech state railway, in the background but my imminent train is red and Austrian.

But Ofsted judges attainment without adjusting for context or intake. The bias in Ofsted in favour of schools with the most favoured intake is long standing and should be well known.

Or - radical idea - employers should stop expecting new recruits to come to them fully-formed and trained in exactly what that organisation needs at the particular moment, and should actually train them. And yes I know NLW and employer NIC don't help. But neither will this.

You really shouldn't ignore the fact that school has become a very unhappy place for too many and good test scores should not be the be all and end all of education.

I think the idea that the UK's current schooling system is really excellent and that its exams-driven testing model is 'rigorous' is a perfect example of a country eagerly marking its own homework, using criteria it made up for itself.

On tackling the NEET crisis. Coherent piece from @aoc-info.bsky.social head David Hughes (@hughesdavid.bsky.social): onemillionfutures.substack.com/p/why-colleg... [Two key paras below.]
With every school working in partnership with their local college, taster days in key stage 3 and a high-quality day release offer open to all pupils, we would see a fundamental shift in the relevance of school to far more pupils and their families. The stigma associated with not being on the A Level to university pathway would start to soften. Perhaps ultimately it would disappear, as outcomes for those who took the day release and who went onto technical degrees, higher technical qualifications and apprenticeships became more transparent to all. To make sure that shift in perceptions happens, we need a strong line of sight from the key stage 4 technical and vocational day release learning all the way through T Levels, V Levels and apprenticeships onto higher learning which supports great careers with solid, secure and highly paid jobs. That ‘promise’ of a good job used to be a key component of why parents wanted their children to go to university, but it has been increasingly doubted as graduate job outcomes have waned, and student debt has risen.

We may be good at drilling kids through tests but the price is the most miserable and disillusioned with school kids in the western world. And no impact on the gap between disadvantaged and others.

Have you actually read the research on what kids think about their education. Many hated it. Employers think it doesn't prepare them for work. We have the most unhappy young people in the OECD. Yes a real Tory triumph.

Half of UK welfare is pensions, 1 in 3 people on Universal Credit are in work, disabled people are disabled, more of them since Covid hit, but the welfare bill as % of GDP is stable (lower than most developed countries) and is forecast to stay stable and below OECD average for the next 5 years.
Chart from the Resolution Foundation of Social security spending as a proportion of GDP by category, Great Britain. The chart from 2007-2008 shows social security spending falling since 2013 from a peak in 2008-2009, pensions rising to account for the biggest share, and disability and incapacity spending rising in the post-Covid years from 2023.

This is no more about the details of immigration policy than the progroms my great great grandparents fled were about Jews committing crimes. It's straightforward racist violence and it needs the strongest possible response.

Everyone on X and elsewhere who called for a violent response should be charged with incitement. Everyone involved in the pogrom should be locked up with exemplary sentences. Govt should make it clear that will be the response in future anywhere else. Enough.

So the answer is pay them less - yes that will really encourage young people into work. Punishing them is not a "big offer". What are older people willing to give up?

Look at life expectancy changes, at who has huge student debt and who doesn't, at who inherits huge housing wealth and who doesn't.. and still pretend inequality isn't an issue.

One of the reasons Rayner has been so damaged by the tax cut is both the scandal itself but also as people tell us in groups “we thought she was different”, Polanski also risks being the same with further to fall given he is seen as different.

May well not cut through in govt chaos. But if it does has potential to hurt Polanski perhaps more than other things in public opinion. Central to Green leader’s appeal is message people are struggling while others dont pay their fair share. But this cld look like that www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
