October! That means I’ve resubbed to Shudder, tons of horror adjacent stuff was added to the Criterion Channel, and so as with every year, expect a very thrillin’ and chillin’ movie thread this month. #filmsky

Last night I finished my second playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 (first time was on Xbox, this time on Switch 2) and I now have to consider this to be one of my all-time favorite games. Was also my first time playing the Phantom Liberty expansion, and it was terrific.

A friend recently turned me on to Bref, a French series of comedy shorts (each episode is around 2 minutes) that came out 15 years ago, and I ended up binging all 82 episodes in a few days — here’s a playlist on YouTube. youtube.com/playlist?lis...

The update to the Criterion Channel app on Apple TV is really nice — makes it easier to find movies based on countries, genres, etc. Still wish you could turn off subtitles though (if you know the non-English language, it becomes distracting).

Have finally come to the realization that I really dislike Ted Lasso. This series has become so incredibly cringe at this point, and I even now dislike characters I used to like.

This is such a fascinating story.

Would normally include the anime series Monster (adaptation of Urasawa's manga), but for some reason it wasn't available as an option -- but this is very representative of the "anime that made me" or that I consider to have marked me the most.

This is what I’ve picked up from the current big Nintendo eShop sale — went big on mystery games that were on my wish list.

Since the original series got added to Criterion Channel this month, here goes yet another rewatch of Evangelion. That pilot episode is still so killer.

The Gentlemen is one of my absolute favourite shows, and wow, season 2 was absolute dynamite. You know from my movie reviews that I’m a sucker for all things Ritchie, and this is Ritchie at his Ritchie-est. Bring on season 3, please.

One thing I’ve come to realize following all the recent terrific thriller/suspense films from France I’ve been watching — released in the past decade — is that Hollywood just doesn’t make good thrillers anymore (or they are extremely rare). Also, the French are better at movie endings.

Without saying your age, what is your favorite movie that came out when you were 20 years old? (Debuted at Cannes just before I turned 21.)

Today I got a haircut, ate some tonkatsu, and watched five (French) films. How was your day?

Started watching the series Hunters, and seeing issues of TV Guide reminds just how much I loved getting a new issue each week, immediately scoping out and marking all of the show I wanted to watch in the coming week, reading the previews… I was such a TV zombie as a kid.

BTW, since watching Gone Girl two weeks ago, I've become quite obsessed with reading Gillian Flynn's other novels, and read through Sharp Objects, The Grownup (a novella), and I'm now reading Dark Places.

Ended up watching four (French) movies today, and all four were bangers.

010

Jean Snow @jeansnow.bsky.social · 15/08/2026

When I was younger I watched a lot of French films — anything with Louis Defunes or Pierre Richard were favorites — and I’ve realized that I haven’t watched much French films recently (in decades, maybe), so decided to do some research on things I should watch from the past decade at least.

Interesting to see this boom in real estate prices in Harajuku (and surrounding areas) -- indeed, as is said, could negatively affect the vibe of the area, in terms of who can afford to be there.

I have not had a drop of alcohol for over 6 months (first time I’ve not drunk regularly since I started drinking as a teen), and I feel like I act even more like a “drunk” (talk too much, stumbling) when I’m out with friends than when I used to drink. Does this make any sense? 😂

@mattalt.bsky.social I have a question for you that consistently baffles me: why do you always refer to Ginza as “THE Ginza”? You’re the only person I’ve ever heard refer to it that way in English, and as for as I know in Japanese, its simply referred to as any other area in the city.

I go through these phases where I find myself watching less movies and more TV series, and I’m currently in one of those phases. I’ll say that I’m quite enjoying the Human Vapor series, even if it feels a bit off in terms of its Japanese-ness (but it’s super fun, especially from episode 4).

I enjoyed the hell out of this issue (and the full Prime arc for that matter) — I’m a sucker for all that meta stuff. Really hope they bring back Prime again soon.
