I promise it’s okay if you aren’t on the lists.

Haha. It’s best books season. And my debut was on so many of them last year that statistically I’ll never be on another list until like book 20. And that’s totally okay.

So many teachers have been telling me that they are getting queer books into the hands of readers, that they are working around bans and challenges and as much of the red tape and shadow banning as they can.

A teacher telling me they work at a Catholic school and they are happy there’s nothing on my cover that screams “queer”. The Teacher: Student always come to me asking for romance. And I ask a “regular” romance and they say no. So I give them two girls kissing or whatever they want.

A teacher asking me point blank what in my book would get her fired. Me: Ugh, I mean this character is queer & kisses this character. Both characters are cis girls. The teacher: Oh yeah, that could get me fired. But I have a bunch of queer books in my classroom library. What admin doesn’t know…

Anne Boyer has resigned as the poetry editor of the New York Times magazine: “Because our status quo is self-expression, sometimes all artists have left is to refuse. So I refuse.”

I have resigned as poetry editor of The New York Times
Magazine.
The Israeli state's U.S-backed war against the people of Gaza is not a war for anyone. There is no safety in it or from it, not for Israel, not for the United States or Europe, and especially not for the many Jewish people slandered by those who claim falsely to fight in their names. Its only profit is the deadly profit of oil interests and weapon manufacturers. The world, the future, our hearts everything grows smaller and harder from from it. This is not only a war of missiles and land invasions. It is the ongoing devastation of the people of Palestine, people who have resisted throughout decades of occupation, forced dislocation, deprivation, surveillance, siege, imprisonment, and torture.
Because our status quo is self-expression, sometimes all artists have left is to refuse. So I refuse. I won't write about poetry alongside the "reasonable" tones of those who aim to acclimatize us to unreasonable suffering. No more g

When I moved here, I quickly learned that I could do something and you good people of the internet helped me start the Queer and Trans (Not So Little) Free Library. If you can help us add more books to the library, we can keep showing our queer and trans community that we care for them.

This weekend anti-LGBTQIA+ hate speech incidents occurred in a number of buildings on campus. Tomorrow, I’m having hard conversations with my students about the words they use, the words they listen to their friends use and how a slur has become frequent on campus. I am furious and sad.

Jen is angry. She is wearing a mask, her glasses and a Coe Alliance tshirt.

Jen F. (she/her) says Black Lives Matter @jdotferg.bsky.social · 09/11/2023

Yessss. I have all these wonders and thoughts here. Sometimes for my students I think it’s control over a big project and they all want to write big projects.

Jen F. (she/her) says Black Lives Matter @jdotferg.bsky.social · 09/11/2023

But a lot of the conversation was about what happens if someone tries to sell inspired by x game and it’s so close it’s a direct retelling just in another mode.

100

Jen F. (she/her) says Black Lives Matter @jdotferg.bsky.social · 09/11/2023

When is it not inspired by but plagiarism especially when it’s not a retelling? Like I do feel that my students often do this. But since they are learning actively maybe inspired by is fine even if it’s really close. They are learning by doing this.

Jen F. (she/her) says Black Lives Matter @jdotferg.bsky.social · 09/11/2023

Had a really interesting conversation about people writing novels that are “inspired by” video games or anime that literally stick way too close to the original. And since I teach adaptations and retellings I have thoughts. But also where is the line?

What is happening in Gaza is a genocide. A group that was persecuted and faced horrid violence, and genocide, cannot repeat the actions and claim justified. Being hurt does not offer license to hurt back. These are fundamental truths in my heart.

Some of my best writing happens when @andrewkarre.bsky.social says, "Go further." Sometimes it had occurred to me that I could go further, but I didn't, and he sees it and calls it out. Sometimes I really thought I had. Always, it gets better.
