There were more men in a single documented gang rape at one school than the number of competitive trans athletes nationally. But I’ve heard a lot more politicians being asked about protecting girls from one of these scenarios and not another… I’ll let you guess which is which.

Boggs on Baldwin's transversal political sensibility: "It was all connected, he was realizing, & to be an artist, for him, was to be a truth-teller about everything-race, sex, politics, love-& it was also to be, in a word he would use with increasing frequency in the years to come, a witness."

To increase civic engagement, people need to know about these hearings with more advance notice. Additionally, you cannot have these hearings at 11 am on a Monday. That might work to attract retirees but almost no one else can attend.

Chaos and authoritarianism at UT Austin. Faculty have just days to show how their courses meet vague requirements of breadth and foundationalism. Proposals will be reviewed by an unspecified entity. No guarantee at all that those who review the proposals have expertise in the field.

I often recall the silence of my fellow undergraduate students, 300 of us in a lecture hall, when our professor, a Rhodes scholar, told us he could kill one of us and still keep his job. all kinds of weird and wrong here. the thing that especially stung was knowing that he was probably correct.

Anyway, remember that things are inevitable right up til the moment they’re not. “Inevitable” describes potential, not reality. It is a nightmare of the future coming to bully those who are asleep—not a description of some kind of logical or pragmatic reality, as some would have us believe.

To honor and celebrate Black August, we are choosing to uplift the lives and legacies of Black disabled radicals. We are focusing on the ways disability has been a feature of — and not a side note to — the multidimensional lives of numerous Black leaders and visionaries. We begin with Paul Robeson.
A cutout white-outlined, green-tinted photograph of Paul Robeson, a middle-aged Black man with short, afro-textured hair wearing a suit and smiling as he looks off-camera. Behind him is a bright green background with white-outlined illustrations of plants, some flowering. Above his head is black text on a white ribbon that says, “Black, Disabled &.” Beside and below this text is large, bold white lettering that says, “Paul Robeson.” The Health Justice Commons logo appears in the bottom right corner of the image.A cutout white-outlined, green-tinted photograph of Paul Robeson, a young Black man with short, afro-textured hair wearing a suit and smiling as he looks toward the camera. Behind him is a bright green background with white-outlined illustrations of flowers. Above his head is white text that says, “Paul Robeson (1898 - 1976) was one of the most renowned and globally recognized figures of the 20th century. He was, in so many ways, a Renaissance man — a gifted actor and singer, a talented athlete, a lawyer, author, scholar, and world-changing activist.” The Health Justice Commons logo appears in the bottom left corner of the image. In the foreground is a green-tinted photograph of Paul Robeson singing before a hanging microphone. He is an older Black man wearing a hat and suit. The photograph is outlined in white with illustrations of flowers. The background of the larger image is bright green. The white text above the photograph says, “In discussing Paul Robeson’s life, much can be said about his commitment to international solidarity and his ability to connect people the world over. But very little has been said about his experiences with mental illness. And how his disability was a feature of — and not a side note to — his multidimensional life.” The Health Justice Commons logo appears in the bottom left corner of the image. The bottom half of the image has a translucent, green-tinted image of Paul Robeson singing amid a massive, tightly-packed crowd of people, all looking toward the camera and many smiling. In the foreground is a cutout white-outlined photograph of Paul Robeson, a young Black man with short afro-textured hair wearing a suit and smiling as he looks off-camera. White-outlined flowers peek out from behind his head and shoulders. The background is bright green. Above Robeson’s head is white text that says, “Paul Robeson survived and endured horrific racism at Rutgers University, but went on to graduate as both an All-American football player and valedictorian. He paid for his education at Columbia Law with money from his professional football career. And he continued acting and singing on both stage and screen. Robeson also became a lifelong advocate for racial and global justice, labor unions and workers’ rights. No one was outside of his committed solidarity.” The Health Justice Commons logo appears in the bottom left corner of the image.

The ICE raids and cruelty we are seeing inflicted on children are unacceptable.

The federal government has stripped legal representation from hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied children. Many will soon face an impossible choice: navigate our immigration system alone or risk detention and deportation.

Our city is stepping up. We've invested $16.9 million in immigration legal services for unaccompanied children, with another $32 million in this year's immigration legal services budget, including rapid-response legal advice and representation for people in detention.

If you need immigration legal support, we're here to help. Our free, confidential Immigration Legal Support Hotline is available in your preferred language, regardless of immigration status.
