You're very welcome to turn up at any of our museums at any time, Melinda. But back to the question - I second Katie; my dispersed team gathers in London for an exhibition + formal afternoon tea, this year it will be at Japan House London + Akira.

Patience and slow thinking are virtues and have their place. Yet there is always more in archives than we can process with available people. I'm not suggesting we should outsource everything to AI, but I think it can free up time for where himan judgement adds most value.

For a time rarer phonecards had some value for collectors, leading to this informative website: www.telephonecardcollector.com/index.htm Yours is a common optical card (discontinued from 1996) and sadly you won't find a payphone left that has a working slot for them.

Normally the hourly Manchester Airport-Redcar services use the Ordsall Chord (www.tpexpress.co.uk/-/media/PDFs...). However, Huddersfield and other Transpennine Route Upgrade works mean that timetables and routes are frequently much altered (including this week).

Worse than that. "From the 1950s, the Borough Council, which included three local builders and a demolition contractor, encouraged the piecemeal but almost total destruction of the old centre." Foster, Pevsner & Wedgwood, The Buildings of England: Birmingham and the Black Country (2022)

From 1880 until 1952. Wait until you hear about Putney Bridge and Hurlingham. Best single source of info on London Underground station renaming is Doug Rose's diagrammatic history (not mobile friendly, easiest to view on a desktop or laptop). www.dougrose.co.uk/tube-history...

The postmodern building is Terry Farrell's Embankment Place above Charing Cross station. To the right below the spire of St Martin-in-the-Fields is, I think, 13-15 York Buildings, once the home of GCHQ. The Adelphi is behind trees to the right of that (and not very curvy).

Today's was one of the rare nine carriage services. If they were all that length, half the issues would disappear.

Jack Kirby @jdk653.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Yes, but that is disproportionate for the distance. The problem with XC is how much delay the trains pick up on long routes. Today was only a little late but enough to miss the path and get stuck behind a stopping train between Stoke and Stockport, so then much delayed.

Jack Kirby @jdk653.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Hope you get home soon anyway. A mere 26 mins delay on CrossCountry for me today, back from Oxford (and ultimately Swindon) to Manchester.

In part because there's a public right of way through the middle of the concourse level. That's why there are so many barriers. I've used this and the previous incarnation for thirty years so have a strong working knowledge of the layout, but it's highly confusing for occasional users.

Have you read Extinct: A Compendium of Obsolete Objects ed. Penner et al? I'd say there's a chapter in each object you've mentioned. Sympathise on time, though. If I had more time, I'd contribute this extant manhole cover and use it to talk about London, politics, and mass rapid transit.
