Also, may not be a popular opinion but The White Lotus is trending towards that cliff and has been since the middle of season 2.

Westworld was almost the perfect premise and preexisting media property for prestige TV. It started so, so strong. And went crashing downhill. It's a bit impressive how badly they managed to screw up A-level casting of a Crichton bad company sci fi featuring the wild west and robot ninjas.

It'a wild that Sudeikis was hired as a writer first at SNL because he's a very good straight man / character actor and seems to be mediocre at the writing/production part.

Girl yelling in guy's ear meme with text from Rawling's unhinged tweet:
"if you put 100 straight and bi women of our age and
average sexual experience in a room together, they could write an
authoritative compendium on straight male kink in an afternoon, from
their own direct experience or that of women they know. I said I
presumed he knew that a cross-dressing fetish is one of the most
common paraphilias in heterosexual men and that this has been in the
psychological literature since Freud"

No, it's the classification of "Latin America" likely moving the Caribbean and Central America away from the US/Canada figure versus lumping all of "Europe" together, which means the comparable UK/France/etc. numbers are offset by high infant mortality in eastern Europe.

J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 3h
Most of Western Europe was around 5% infant mortality it seems (www.researchgate.net/figure/nfant...), so I presume much of that is driven by Soviet bloc and adjacent numbers/presumptions (from another source, Albania seems to be around 15% in 1950, which feels correct).

This doesn't mean there aren't adjacent problems or obstacles with old industries decaying or with AI in particular. Our policy preference for a room's worth of billionaire figureheads running an industry sucks, but generally Schumpeter and his progeny have been right over the last century.
000
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 5h
This is why a lot of the discourse about AI taking jobs is somewhat misguided. This niche industry did not exist before 1987. As long as the gains from efficiency improvements find their way back to the economy, jobs usually wind up being created faster than the old ones are destroyed.

Evidence law. Admissions of a party opponent are admissible, so soneone who pleads guily can have the plea entered against them in a related civil suit (like DUI -> wrongful death suit). No contest is generally not an admission of anything so it's often not admissible in a related civil case.

Disproportionately the guys most worried about it seem to often look like this
Disbarred lawyer turned self appointed journalist Richard Luthmann. Chubby bespectacled white man wearing an ivory colored fedora, half unbuttoned dress shirt, dark sport coat ans dumb pocket square with a tropical urban center in the background. Very punchable face.
010
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 19h
Right? Like it's random anecdotes in newspapers and I know of a few guys who should've been accused but no one who ever got falsely accused.

And, yeah, we should be agressively comfortable in ruining the lives of immature scumbags.
021
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
And if you have that antisociality in that setting, what stops it when the issue is tax fraud or bribery? Can we trust you to call the bar if your partner swindles a client? Will you try to make the world a better place or are you worried what the boys on the yacht will think?
120
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
To be clear, what happened in the Cornell story is rape. But the toxicity goes beyond criminal definitions. A few of their frat brothers seemed to know it was wrong in real time. They had to have talked about it. Why didn't more of them apologize to her? That's antisocial as hell.
220
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
You'd get near universal agreement on this if you drop the word "sexual" and ask whether dudes getting charged with battery for bar fights should face consequences to their career goals. Make it sexual and dudes lose their minds. Again, weird, that.
120
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
The focus should be on the victim and preserving his or her rights to pursue their life, liberty, and happiness, but if it's not we should consider the social interest before we consider the perpetrator's, and the social interest is not promoting dudes with sexual assault allegations against them.
120
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
Even independently of the jurisdiction's definition of sexual assault, to the extent sex is quasi-contractual, why on Earth would we want our business or political communities littered with men whose prior sex partners hired a lawyer or went to the cops if we can help it?
121
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
That said, I'm very comfortable "ruining" the imagined futures of young men who engage in sexual assault. While I believe more in rehabilitation than a punitive penal system, your median college sexual assailant has demonstrated something extremely toxic that should be treated as extremely toxic.
131
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
The other is that empirically, the percent of sexual interactions leading to any kind of accusation is so, so miniscule that you're more likely to die in a plane wreck than be falsely accused of sexual assault.
130
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
For one, testimony being evidence means that *any* human activity involving admitted contact should have the same fear. Yet men never claim to worry about their contact sports buds later accusing them of assault and battery. It's just sexual contact that creates the fear. Weird, that.
120
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
As to culpability, there's a pervasive fear of false accusations, that almost any man who engages in sexual conduct with a woman could become a rapist if she has regrets or changes her mind. It's a completely irrational fear that a lot of men have talked themselves into taking seriously.
220
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
That they almost never do and focus instead on the facts/culpability is telling.
110
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
The punitive desire of victims is completely understandable. And victims have nothing to do with the US being a penal state. And it's counterintuitive that punishment flexibility improves the odds of reform. But it's something concerned men could push for to address "ruin their lives" concerns.
140
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
This perceived dichotomy - where the accused feel that their legal outcomes are either big felon prison time or skipping freely through life - creates a powerful incentive to fight tooth and nail - a la Sun Tzu's bit about leaving an enemy an out or else facing the force of their desperation.
140
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
One is that criminality and punishment are two distinct issues that, for a whole bunch of reasons, people in this country cannot separate. We are an ill people who think the two options - both in this area and out - are total ruination and getting to live the six figure three cars life and... no.
130
J. D. @jdetc.bsky.social · 20h
Agreed. Part of the reticence for men signing up and endorsing this sort of belief is comparing the draconian punishment with the perceived ease of being wrongfully convicted and/or facing disproportionate punishment to the level of criminal intent. But that's wrong on two fronts.

It seems dispositive of the historical value of the King James Decalogue that the only people who ever advocate for it being on school walls are Christian nationalists. It remains baffling to me that courts ever bought or buy that nonsense.
