We identified 6 microbial cohorts, each corresponding to depths or water masses like Antarctic Bottom Water and ancient Pacific Deep Water. Each have microbes with unique survival strategies.
The voyage to collect water samples began at Easter Island and ended near Antarctica in the South Pacific. Samples were taken at numerous depths to give a complete picture of microbial life at each location and have shed new understanding about how these populations are layered, each employing survival strategies for their specific environments. Using 300+ water samples from Easter Island to Antarctica, we mapped microbial diversity from surface to seafloor. We found a “prokaryotic phylocline”—a sharp increase in microbial richness just below the surface.
