"what does it mean to privilege JOY in AI development?" @dupatton.bsky.social sharing his insights at #SSWR2026 @pennsp2.bsky.social
Large projected slide with a bright yellow-green background titled “Joy: What is it?” The slide lists bullet points defining joy as an emotional response to a perceived good, sometimes emerging after pain, grief, or collective struggle, and emphasizing that joy is not passive but cultivated through intentional practice. A tall black speaker stack partially blocks the right side of the slide, and a smaller teleprompter screen with partial text is visible below.

In my #NASW2025 poll, the most-used word when social workers think about social media was... 👉 “Bias.” Also high on the list: Privacy. Risk. Advocacy. Cyberbully. Social workers are not ambivalent. We’re careful. What would help you feel more confident showing up online as a social worker?

At #NASW2025, social workers said they rarely use social media professionally (1.9/10)… but rated their frustration with influencers misusing “trauma” & “narcissist” a 7.2/10. We’re watching. We’re cringing. Maybe it’s time we started posting. @naswsocialworkers.bsky.social #EthicalInfluencing

I'm so sad and angry for all of the "probationary" federal employees who were fired today. So many of them were actually tops in their field who left their established jobs to do good for the world. Sadly, we can't let Trump's incompetence destroy America - too many people will get hurt.

Let's be very clear. President Musk's plan to purge the federal sector is going to disproportionately hurt workers with high school and some college, who earn more in federal jobs than in the private sector. Everyone else earns less in federal jobs. www.cbo.gov/publication/...

Fighting Trump's policies and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation doesn't just help researchers, it supports youth - way more than displaying Pride flags or posting on social media (yes, I see it). CDC YRBS needs to be fully restored. Data saves lives and we need it to protect our communities. 3/3 #DataMatters

highlights the value of intersectional data. The survey shows us that LGBTQ+ White and AAPI youth were least likely to consider or attempt suicide, where as Native/Indigenous youth were the most likely. This has implications for resource allocation, program development, and public policy. 2/3

5. Prioritize self-care and well-being. Illegitimate authorities and the struggle against them can be emotionally and physically draining. Take care of yourself and do not let your pain fuel unwise actions. A healthy, balanced life is key to effective, long-term resistance. 9/9

4. Be willing to disobey when necessary. Dissent alone isn't enough; it's often ignored. Disobedience, when done thoughtfully, can challenge the very legitimacy of unjust authority. Remember the words of Walt Whitman: "Resist much, obey little." @profhalloran.bsky.social 8/9

What to do: 1. Question everything - @jimmysw.bsky.social's insights about digital literacy are essential. 2. Speak out against injustice! Don't be silent in the face of cruelty or oppression. Whether it's a small act of defiance (like this graphic) or a large public protest, your voice matters. 6/9

Dissent vs. disobedience: You can disagree with an authority (dissent) but still obey. Anti-authoritarians, however, are comfortable with both dissent AND disobedience, challenging any authority they deem illegitimate. Also different from oppositional (see quote ⬇️) @njsmyth.bsky.social 5/9
