Fun fact: This article that Cruz uses to support the claim that "there is little evidence" actually says the opposite. So not only is he sprinkling a handful of studies, they don't even support his claim! www.jowr.org/jowr/article...

Price discrimination is, of course, a rather eternal dream of the retailer. Machine learning (and "big data" generally) just slots into that dream so very perfectly. It's a new technique for an old impulse --- which doesn't mean it should not be contested!

Until you've been on the receiving end, I think it's easy to dehumanize everyone on the editorial/review side of publishing. We are all just "adversaries" who are blocking the way to that which is valued (pubs). It's hard to know how to change people's perspectives on that. <obv this is no excuse>

Who needs history when you can play at being an entrepreneur? Or maybe it's playing at being in a marketing department. Either way, I heard that history is bunk.

Apparently this was uncovered via a "routine audit." The fact that those searches occurred over a 7-month period tells us something about how often those audits are done. I would be interested to know more about that.

I'm with you on this one. I have followed Carl for a long time and his assimilation into Alpha has been, well, hard to figure. My best explanation: Approaching learning from a cognitive psychology perspective for too long can leave you deeply out of touch with *education*

It's funny, really, to regard lesson planning as mere "dross" Coming up with interesting things to do with my students is quite possibly my favorite part of the work of teaching. The amount that I've learned from developing lessons is immense. But whatever, screw it, let the machine do it

The list of use cases is actually quite revealing. Look at that last one: some sort of scheduling task. That's juxtaposed with a teacher using it to generate their daily lessons. What this reveals: *all* of this is framed as merely administrative burden that *should* be offloaded.

I mostly just keep thinking "the purpose of a system is what it does." But especially the second part, which rarely gets quoted as often, that there is: "no point in claiming that the purpose of a system is to do what it constantly fails to do"

What are we to make of the fact that this "yearlong investigation" seems to have had such little impact back in 2012? Some have suggested that the current fervor isn't really about data centers as such, but a growing displeasure with big tech. But I'm not so sure. The "techlash" isn't new, either.

It strikes me as very "thing-centric," which probably accounts for the omission of related literacies work. The assumption is that AI, being a "new thing," requires a whole new literacy framework. It's striking how little the document attempts to establish any continuity with prior tech literacies.

one of the most comprehensive surveys on children’s use of AI--conducted March 18-26, 2026, among 9-17yr olds in the US (N = 1,204)--has been released www.commonsensemedia.org/sites/defaul... highlighting key findings 🧵 "Nearly 9 in 10 kids age 9 to 17 (86%) use/interact with AI"
Nearly 9 in 10 kids age 9 to 17 (86%) use or interact
with AI, including about one in four (24%) who do so
on a daily basis.
Teens use AI more often, but use is widespread even among younger
adolescents, with 81% of 9- to 12-year-olds, 89% of 13- to 15-year-olds, and
92% of 16- to 17-year-olds saying they use or interact with AI. Nearly 3 in 10
teens (29% of 13- to 17-year-olds) and 17% of 9- to 12-year-olds use AI daily.
AI-generated summaries in search engine results are the most widely used
form of AI among 9- to 17-year-olds, with 75% having used or interacted with
them. Just over two-thirds (67%) have used AI chatbots, including 58% of 9- to
12-year-olds, 71% of 13- to 15-year-olds, and 77% of 16- to 17-year-olds.
However, when kids are asked which AI they use most often, ChatGPT is by far
the most frequently mentioned (by 40% of all 9- to 17-year-olds), followed by
Google’s AI offerings, including Gemini, AI summaries, or other Google AI
tools (24%).
