3. a lot of design effort is going into hiding details from users about agent loops because errors are scary. i think this is a bad idea. errors are signal about mismatches between the implicit context of what the user wants and the explicit environment the agent finds itself in.

Will this also mean a JCEF-enabled runtime becomes the default? I’m tired of having to muck about with settings just to get IntelliJ’s built-in Markdown and Mermaid rendering to work.

I feel like scrolling is normally very tactile, and either that’s broken because the page doesn’t move when I scroll or it’s hard to follow because the content only animates when the page moves.

We had an ICE scare yesterday and even though we’re afraid of the repercussions of being vocal, we feel that it’s also important to inform people that this is right at our front door. ICE is not some far away boogeyman. They are here right now, spreading fear in our community.

We’re so grateful to our entire staff and their bravery. They did the right things and couldn’t have dealt with this situation in a better way. We are grateful to our community activists that came to support us from @miracmn @litosonlake and Monarcha. We hope that if you find yourself in the same situation, that you find these resources helpful. Peace and take care of each other ❤️Photo by Christina Nguyen on December 04, 2025. I learned from tagging along with seniors on outages (and watching my dad fix things around the house as a kid) but it seems like new hires are less interested in doing that these days? Maybe I need to do a better job of offering the opportunity.

💯 agreed; I honestly think many engineers don’t have a solid mental model or methodology for troubleshooting and problem solving. It’s something you don’t learn in school, for sure.

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

😅 came here to say this exactly- what are the constraints and what are you optimizing for? This is also why I’m suspicious of the premise that vibe-coding is more successful in an “impure” context- you may not be building some crucial shared infrastructure but the trade-offs are just as important.

OkHttp MockWebServer has been pretty helpful for us in this regard- still exercises the full interceptor stack and the transport layer and the variance added by the local http server is minimal.

From another perspective, friction is texture. Yes, "frictionless" things are easier. But "easy" in a vacuum is worth nothing. What's valuable is making the RIGHT THING easier to do than the WRONG THING. Otherwise, people will happily go down the path of least resistance and do the wrong thing!!!

Things I think folks can learn to say, get comfortable saying, and show others are okay to say, that would genuinely improve the state of the world: "I didn't know that" "I was wrong" "What does that word mean?" "Can you explain this?" "I don't think I understand" "I don't know" "I'm confused"
