3. a lot of design effort is going into hiding details from users about agent loops because errors are scary. i think this is a bad idea. errors are signal about mismatches between the implicit context of what the user wants and the explicit environment the agent finds itself in.

Conclusion would be observing that Trump and the loser online right made it *fun* to be cruel. Only portions of the left (whole spectrum) make it *fun* to look out for your neighbor and say “better things are possible.” (13/13)

‘Humans use Energy and Water too’
An engineer I admire was lamenting about AI. He said that his new programming agent is excellent at fixing bugs! And all that it costs is a bunch of energy and many litres of water. He said that he co...

it's crazy that 500 years ago, you would see the ruler of your country maybe once in your life and hear whispers that they're the Sun God, but now with social media, you get to see on a daily basis that they're the most unhinged, idiotic, and unhappy person you know

ICE raided a James Beard award winning restaurant & because the chef/owner was prepared, left emptyhanded:

We had an ICE scare yesterday and even though we’re afraid of the repercussions of being vocal, we feel that it’s also important to inform people that this is right at our front door. ICE is not some far away boogeyman. They are here right now, spreading fear in our community.

We’re so grateful to our entire staff and their bravery. They did the right things and couldn’t have dealt with this situation in a better way. We are grateful to our community activists that came to support us from @miracmn @litosonlake and Monarcha. We hope that if you find yourself in the same situation, that you find these resources helpful. Peace and take care of each other ❤️Photo by Christina Nguyen on December 04, 2025. May be an image of text that says 'IF I.C.E. COMES TO YOUR RESTAURANT: UNLESS THE AGENTS HAVE A SIGNED JUDICIAL WARRANT, THEY CANNOT ENTER A PRIVATE AREA LIKE THE KITCHEN WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION EVEN IF THEY LIE AND SAY THY DON'T NEED A WARRANT, STAND YOUR GROUND AND INSIST THAT YOU NEED PAPERWORK (2/5)'.Photo by Christina Nguyen on December 04, 2025. May be an image of text that says 'IF I.C.E. COMES TO YOUR RESTAURANT: HAVE OTHER STAFF OR PEOPLE PRESENT RECORD THEM AND EVERYTHING THEY ARE SAYING. (PEOPLE DOING UNLAWFUL THINGS HATE BEING CAUGHT IN TH ACT) YOU HAVE THE RIGHT to REFUSE SERVICE & YOU CAN ASK M tO LEAVE YOUR PRIVATE PROPERTY IF THY DON'T HAVE A WARRANT. (3/5)'.WE ARE HEARTBROKEN THAT OUR IMMIGRANT
COMMUNITIES IN THE TWIN CITIES ARE BEING
TARGETED AND TERRORIZED BY THE CURRENT
ADMINISTRATION. THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE THAT
ARE BEING USED AS POLITICAL PAWNS AND IT'S
APPALLING.

REGARDLESS OF THEIR LEGAL STATUS, THERE ARE
SO MANY LATINOS & SOMALIANS WHO ARE AFRAID
OF BEING DETAINED DUE TO MISTAKEN IDENTITY
BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY MIGHT NOT GET DUE
PROCESS & A FAIR TRIAL. THEY WILL JUST END UP IN
DETENTION CENTERS & A LEGAL PROCESS THAT
HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS A BLACK HOLE.

WE STAND IN SUPPORT OF OUR IMMIGRANT
COMMUNITY, WHO ARE THE BACKBONE OF THIS
COUNTRY. WITHOUT IMMIGRANTS, AMERICA IS NOT
THE SAME PLACE. STAY SAFE OUT THERE & TAKE
CARE OF YOUR NEIGHBORS.

LOVE,
HOLA AREPA & HAI HAI

The Python Software Foundation was recommended for a $1.5M grant from the National Science Foundation. The terms of the award said PSF could not work on DEI, whether or not the grant funding was used for it. PSF therefore declined the funding. Science suffers, but commitment to core values remains

My boss: Can't you get Copilot to validate the info in the spreadsheet? Me: Well, do we want it to be accurate or not? Because either I check it myself or I ask Copilot and then check its output *and* the spreadsheet, so... Boss: What's the point of Copilot then? Me: Exactly.

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

I don't know who needs to see this, as the saying goes, but platform engineering is not just "devops" or "infra" by another name. Platform engineering is about bringing a product sensibility and design ethos to the infra-shaped technical problem space.

From another perspective, friction is texture. Yes, "frictionless" things are easier. But "easy" in a vacuum is worth nothing. What's valuable is making the RIGHT THING easier to do than the WRONG THING. Otherwise, people will happily go down the path of least resistance and do the wrong thing!!!

Things I think folks can learn to say, get comfortable saying, and show others are okay to say, that would genuinely improve the state of the world: "I didn't know that" "I was wrong" "What does that word mean?" "Can you explain this?" "I don't think I understand" "I don't know" "I'm confused"

The most leftist thing about me: I do not care about immigration. I think it’s a nonissue. I care a LOT about how people are treated once they’re here, but not how they got here. Legal, illegal, I do not care. 1/2

Woke transit (car) vs patriot transit (bike)

Needs license/registration so the government can track you vs no registration
Government regularly inspects it vs no inspection
Legally forces you to pay insurance to pay for other people's accidents vs bike insurance not required
Fuel needs big government subsidies to stay under $5/gallon vs no need to government subsidies
Government can revoke privilege to drive at any time vs biking privilege cannot be revoked

Every tool has assumptions about how it'll be used baked into it; it makes doing certain things easier and other things harder. Not thinking about the assumptions you're building into your tool doesn't mean there aren't any - it just means you're not able to curate them.
