I've been seeing lots of articles like this right about ... (dis)continuities between IL and whatever AIL is or might be. Also, "algorithmic literacy" (AL) sometimes in play, too. It really feels like a time of shifting, nebulous definitions.

Excited to announce that I've signed a contract with @mitpress.bsky.social for a new book! It's about ImageNet, a dataset of 14 million photos. Without it, we likely wouldn't have "AI" as we currently know it. I've been thinking about this book for over 5 years, and am excited to finally write it.

People designed genAI so it always replicates our existing injustices. To take an already underrepresented group & just replace them w/ chatbots trained on centuries of anti-Indigenous writing, esp when reporting immediately affects their communities, is revolting. There MUST be real consequences.

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers. He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

I have some reservations about Doctorow's new AI book, but one thing he is absolutely right on is: AI companies throwing buttons and widgets into areas in applications that you don't expect them to be in, so you end up clicking on them by mistake and driving "AI engagement" metrics lol

I have to say: I'm really feeling the tension this fall 26 semester between an older, (perhaps antiquated/deprecated?) paradigm of library instruction and ... whatever the inchoate version of it is in the present. For ex: if natural lang search is "eating our lunch," how much should we capitulate?

I'm working on updating the library GenAI citation guide. We're a Copilot campus, so I'm trying to include Copilot examples, but I just realized the "share" capability in Copilot is terrible! If you "share" a Copilot chat, it copies the entire response onto your clipboard and a link.
