Imagining an alternate timeline where journalism hadn't been hollowed out as a viable profession by the time I went to undergrad, so, instead, I went to j school, became a tech journalist, and then could cash out with my own gormless AI book this year. #Roosecore

So meaningful, earlier this week, to be in a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event on campus and to not hear a single mention of AI. IMO it's notable that when people are concerned about slow, relational work, & important questions of authority/testimony, that it doesn't seem to come up.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.

I edited a piece on the (dis)continuities between critical IL and AIL that will be coming out in the special issue of "CJAL" later this year that uses hauntology. Also very interesting.

I've been seeing lots of articles like this right about ... (dis)continuities between IL and whatever AIL is or might be. Also, "algorithmic literacy" (AL) sometimes in play, too. It really feels like a time of shifting, nebulous definitions.

Excited to announce that I've signed a contract with @mitpress.bsky.social for a new book! It's about ImageNet, a dataset of 14 million photos. Without it, we likely wouldn't have "AI" as we currently know it. I've been thinking about this book for over 5 years, and am excited to finally write it.
Screenshot of a deal report from Publishers Marketplace that reads: “Coauthor of AI CON and cohost of the Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 podcast Alex Hanna’s NET WORKS: IMAGENET AND THE CREATION OF THE MODERN AI DATASET, on the labor behind ImageNet’s cache of 14 million photos from the early aughts that became the backbone of AI datasets, to Rachel Moore at MIT Press (world).

People designed genAI so it always replicates our existing injustices. To take an already underrepresented group & just replace them w/ chatbots trained on centuries of anti-Indigenous writing, esp when reporting immediately affects their communities, is revolting. There MUST be real consequences.
