A good read showing how when arts, culture, and government agencies are appreciated and funded, things can be good.

Updated the City Council Endorsement Matrix with today’s slate of endorsed candidates from ABC Toronto. A bit strange that an org calling for a better city is endorsing so many longtime incumbents, I got to say.

Side research find: during election campaigns of any kind, maybe we need to bring back beer and pretzels with the candidates nights, such as this one for Windsor-area Liberal hopefuls during the 1971 Ontario provincial election. The Lance, October 8, 1971 #onpoli

Historically, the Quebec City area and the Beauce were the strongholds federally of Social Credit/Ralliement créditiste in the 1960s, so there is precedent for a rightward tilt...

And yet, despite the fact he kinda looked like my father, who I loved dearly and didn't want to see hurt in any way, I had no problems seeing Toht melt in Raiders of the Lost Ark during its original theatrical run.

Wait...actually there's something earlier. The Hulk TV show from the late 1970s. I couldn't handle the transformation sequences. You may be noticing a pattern here.

I put off watching that sequence for even longer than I should have because I kinda didn't want to spoil that memory and see how silly the sequence actually was (meteorsh*t and all).

I rarely do these sorts of things, but here we go. The comic book adaptation of Creepshow, which I seem to recall first encountering at the Coles at Charles and Yonge (now a Shoppers Drug Mart), and being totally freaked out by the transformation of Jordy Verrill. It took me years to watch it.

In other words, a woman who, say, was referred to as "Mary Smith" during her public career was only identified as "Mrs. John Smith" in her obituary. (I'm not revealing names because...well, I need to keep some of my work a surprise, right?)

Old journalism habits that drive me bananas: doing research on a female public figure who is referred to by their first name during the mid-1930s when serving in a political office, then by their husband's first name when she died in the late 1950s. A total step backwards.

Saw my first Bradford lawn sign this morning. It screams "yesterday's man," from the font (which reminds of budget record albums from the UK from the early 1970s) to the tired-sounding slogan. Perhaps this is an example I could use in a book I might write someday about how nostalgia is a blinder?
