We’re getting preemptive announcements from our professors about AI use, as if we’re already guilty of using AI-generated text, and it’s up to us to prove our innocence. The paranoia is crazy. The day AI can convince me it wrote something in my voice is the day I quit being a writer. Not a chance.

MLA formatting will trigger these AI detectors, too. Academic language itself triggers it. I’ll live with the typos, thanks. As a professional writer, it’s horrible to watch. It’s tearing apart the learning process. Off-loading cognitive thinking is a dystopian future I don’t want to live in.

When a professor prompts an essay with technical questions, it triggers AI detectors. Neuroplasticity, sensory perception, etc. I will defend my original work against all AI accusations. I keep my drafting notes. The presumption of guilt on students using AI is out of control right now. It’s awful

We’re in an AI transition & I get that many are confused about. Let me be clear, I canceled my MSWord subscription (of 20 years) bc there’s no way to turn AI off. Now using Notes and AI-disabled Pages to write. I will go back to spiral notebooks if I have to. I went back to college to learn.

Kind of depends on what’s getting done, doesn’t it, Peter? If a serial killer gets away with murder for decades, he is not morally good, just good at killing. The 2 “goods” here are not the same. One is functional good. The other is ethical good. He’s conflating them. He thinks we’re all stupid.

A cardiologist told me to take it in the morning before you get out of bed. Sitting up. Feet flat on the floor. Don’t talk. Everything else is just approximate. A good doctor understands that, will make allowances for it being high at her office. If worried, buy a home monitor & check it regularly

My uncle is a retired USAF test pilot and worked for Lockheed designing and testing the cockpit of the F-35 for several years. I can only imagine how thrilled he must not be about this.

My advisor told me a terminal MFA in Creative Writing plus my industry experience would lead me straight into an assistant professor tenure track if I want it, so that’s nice to know — if I survive intact.

Yes. Mom’s side took their time on that route. Stopped in Tennessee and Arkansas for a generation or two. All the others went to Texas, even the northerners from Illinois.

I bought a MacBook Neo because my Air went to MacBook heaven and I love it. emergency buy due to a looming online exam & I didn’t expect much. It’s an amazing swap for the 13” Air,$599. If anyone’s considering it, do it. The only drawback is no backlit keyboard, but it’s a great machine. 😀👍
