West Seattle. I whine about transit and biking issues and take photos of bugs and mushrooms. Views expressed are my own.

Bags of soil and a table are no problem on a bike.

Steam Deck! I got one years ago and it's the best thing ever. I have a retro library on it with old DOS games and classic console ROMs.

Are they just redoing studies from scratch over and over, like Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill? New soil samples and practical tests? Or are there bureaucratic layers adding a bunch of time in between small tasks? I'm not sure what a year of studies means in terms of work being done.

I kind of get the big picture, but I'm having a hard time conceptualizing what I'm assuming is a sizeable group of people doing full time day jobs for years. Like updating the stormwater runoff analysis, I'd assume that's a handful of variables updated in a spreadsheet or computer model.

@theurbanist.org and @publicola.bsky.social might be interested in covering Jennifer Godfrey's retaliatory harassment doxxing critics to their employers. She's a public figure, it's dangerous for her chill criticism like this.

I know I won't go or take my kid there knowing they're one of the biggest drivers of NIMBY bullshit, and now harassment of critics on top of that.

In my experience the average aggressive driver will slam on the brakes or swerve when you just draw back your arm with a handful of rocks and you don't have to actually throw them. It's my go-to when walking my daughter to daycare after a particularly bad road rage incident. Happy to be that guy.

I've started carrying a ulock in my left hand and actively using it as a deterrent. When I do this it makes a huge difference. In problem spots I stretch out my arm and wave it up and down and don't get any close calls whatsoever.

AI is a service, not a tool, and people who work in the industry are desperately trying to build large enough investment portfolios that they don't fall into what they call the "permanent underclass" that will result from the devaluation of labor.

I've got a handful. Some are red and say unauthorized parking. These are my favorite though. I'm thinking about making my own and doing a bulk order of eggshell or paper stickers that are difficult to remove to get a cheaper price. Here's where I got this one: www.etsy.com/listing/4527...

This is an ignorant take. You're not the good driver you're claiming to be, you're a problem but don't internalize that because it's other people who have to deal with that problem.

I carry stickers on my bike for this situation... And if you call parking enforcement they usually show up within like 20 minutes or so. Fast enough that they can actually write a ticket.

It's funny how a ten mile ride for recreation is basically nothing but a ten mile ride for transportation to a specific destination feels like a major trip.

Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Ah, I misread the post. Tomorrow is a bike adventure day with my daughter, moving Sunday. I'm trying to do a big 10+ mile trip every weekend that I'd normally only do via car. An inter-city trip south for an urbanism event looked fun.

I'm confused why places like this get marked as bike routes on Google Maps. This is 100% narrow walking-speed sidewalk riding, I wouldn't even take my road bike at max speed on this road.

It looks like the Green River trail is 100% separated bike path.

Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I'm mainly just whining, I'm looking at it now and it looks like the Marginal and Green River bike trails cover most of the distance. I think I've found a mostly safe route for the gap. I've never biked south of White Center/SODO, I'm always a bit nervous until I'm familiar with an area.

Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I really want to try biking there from West Seattle but it takes so much time to go through the entire route on street view / satellite maps to see if the green lines on the map are actually bike lanes or just sharrows and plan a safe route.

Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
One of the wild things living there and watching these projects was how easy it is. Like a cut and cover subway being built while a road was in use with a temporary lid, watching excavators turn a road into a river in like a year, watching a mega block w/ 30 story towers built in three years.

$100 million from ST3 revenue, 40% of this station's budget (which is MASSIVE for a light rail station), is being spent on a parking garage in Renton. I would argue that the money spent on bike and bus lanes to feed the station would be a better and more reasonable spend than a parking garage.

Many of the Korean highway removals are restored creeks with nature buffers and walking/biking trails with picnic and hangout spots like boardwalks with benches and pocket parks. They're a destination you go to hang out with people as-is. Always crowded. Only cost is surface repairs and lighting.

Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
From what I've read they're spending millions on programming that draws people in. An ice rink, events, etc. It's a success in that respect. But I see a successful community or public space as one that can passively draw people in by just being a nice place to hang out.

Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I wish it specifically funded trains. I think a ton of the money is being bled off to fund pet projects as bribes to municipalities to get approval to allow the train to be built.

250 miles of protected bike lanes?
010
Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Activating these spaces requires so much effort from the community that only something that is in very high demand but outright banned from existing anywhere else can make it happen. Nobody is going to hang out under a highway. That's why encampments form under highways.
110
Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I've seen this pulled off under elevated train lines but never successfully under freeways. The best example is the Collonade under i5, but that requires massive effort from the community and an urban bike park can only exist in a space that sucks too much for NIMBYs to fight use by young people.
110
Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Korea is ripping them all down and the spaces that replace them are beautifully community and nature spaces. Freeways don't belong in cities at all.

A driver caused a massacre in the Bronx today. Ran through a crosswalk and a red light and struck a bunch of people and five cars. What will the city council’s 17 e-bike bills do to address this?

I've ridden my road bike carrying the paddle board on my back though, and the kayak is only 15lbs heavier, so I might try it out either putting them in the rack cage or hanging on the side supported by a running board.

Jay @jayspeidell.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
These are cool. Lectric actually makes one that bolts to the tubing on the bottom of the running boards - but it's proprietary to their pet trailer. I might try to make something that riffs on that. It's for an inflatable paddleboard or kayak, I didn't want to make the bike top heavy w/ it on top.

The axle is just below the middle of the running boards that support the panniers.

Anyone pull a trailer with a long-tail cargo bike? I'm wondering if there are any good trailer hitch options that can mount to the frame, as an axle mount isnt really practical for my bike. I want to pull a trailer while also using my rack/panniers for cargo.

I don't know why it's such a radical idea to allow children to play on playgrounds and playfields in the winter. It would be a drop on the bucket next to what we spend on street lights.

Neoliberalism. The American system of government is fundamentally built around trickle down economics, robbing the poor to pay the rich. We fall into bureaucratic hell if we try to do anything that deviates from that mission. We can barely build light rail.
