Agreed. I use beehive for my email distro and I also use Wordpress for an additional landing page/signups. Either one of them alone is good; ghost is too, kit also. There’s too many people I like who I’m confused by their insistence on rocking with substack.

So many other options too. At first I regretted it when I left bc it was such a better product comparatively but that’s not even the case anymore. Substack has really convinced people they have a growth engine that excuses writers from doing the work themselves; it can be done.

Many years later in '21 when I did some consulting work w/ Mass Appeal he was so happy to hear about my family/our life in the 'burbs. Proud that this dream work could also fulfill life responsibilities. I'll miss his genial composure; he never seemed consumed by distractions--just enjoyed the ride.

Sacha was brilliant, but also just as kind as he was talented. As a young hip-hop journalist at Vibe, he worked on a DVD extras project I was on and I coaxed him into a lunch that I told him I could expense (he knew I couldn't) and he regaled me with A1 stories + advice. And then footed the bill.
