I suppose that's a question of how you describe "telling a story." In my definition, you are only telling a story if you have authorship over the events of the story. Martha Wells tells the story of Murderbot, but Murderbot is not telling the story. Your definition may differ.

You're right, it's not a monolithic system. I assumed the OP was making a distinction between a general "story game" style of play vs. the more traditional "adventure game" style, in terms of giving players authorship over the world.

Forget the "later" part, then. To keep it simple, the distinction I'm making is that in an adventure game, the players are not telling a story while they play. They're only able to control their own character's actions.

My distinction is whether the players can make choices about the story above and beyond their own character's actions. I'm not saying one is better than the other, both can be equally fun for different reasons at different times.

I have to say I think there's a very fundamental difference between PbtA and OSR. PbtA is a story game, OSR games are adventure games. The difference is in whether the players that day want to tell a story, or have an experience that will later be told as a story.

The idea of a "tech industry" has always relied on "computer" being a special kind of medium, akin to alchemy. And if tech demands to be king, AI hype has now elevated LLMs to a king of kings. But the solipsism has hit a dead end. The only way forward is to recognize that computers are not special.
