Lookit. Deep down every Irish person wants to spin some yank a yarn that gets cited as fact in some factual text. We told an Irish American girl that when the Muppets was released in Ireland, Kermit the Frog was called Dermot the Frog because Cromwell’s son was a Kermit.

I’ve expanded on the thought process behind this on that shitty platform that is Instagram due to the word count. We’re @imbibe_coffee .The image was created by a real life graphic designer:).
Cream poster with Imbibe logo at top.
Poster reads.gave:

Last year we gave:

7.5% of our profits to staff.

7.5% to Women’s Aid

7.5% to a bridge building program at a Colombia coffee co-op

7.5% to local projects

"...we were more than recompensed for her loss by the safe arrival from India in October of three tiger cubs ... presented by Surgeon Heuston FRCSI of Sipri ... who secured them in a cave after having shot their parents." Pretty grim, that.

This is like an image from "Where's Waldo", except you have to find the one man who doesn't have any facial hair.
A ballroom scene with men and women dancing. All the men appear to have copious amounts of facial hair.

TIL that the 'Gardens of the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland' had a thriving lion breeding programme, which between 1857 and 1886 produced 131 cubs, of which 85 were sold and distributed across the US, India, and 'elsewhere' including Peru.

Won't anyone think of the reporters? Freeman's Journal, February 1894
"Perhaps it would not be out of place to suggest here that the Royal Dublin Society might provide some little accommodation for the reporters attending these lectures. As a result, they are delivered in darkness, owing to the use of the lantern for displaying photographic views, and it is no easy matter for a reporter to sit in a confined position in the crowded auditorium taking notes of lectures which are usually of an exceedingly difficult and technical character.'

I suppose I’m going to have to get used to it but I find all the Budget Day “coverage” frankly pathetic. Instead of reporting and scrutinising government and its kite flying proposals, instead it’s all: “what sweetie do you really hope to get under the Budget Day tree”.

I also think it is a shame that those on the left who do have religious convictions have too often abdicated the public articulation of these beliefs. Their absence simply allows the Right to claim and distort religion.

I know quoting the Bible isn't terribly fashionable on the ole Bluesky, but I am just so so so so tired (& outraged) by the way Trumpists (and Conservatives more generally) have hijacked Christianity for their own political ends and make a mockery of the Bible's actual teachings. It is shameful.

I am trying to determine whether a plaque, along with some stained glass, still exist commemorating Philip Meadows Taylor.
Text referring to a memorial fund for Colonel Meadows-Taylor, which lists four beautiful stained windows, and a tablet in his honour.

A query for any Dublin heritage people, or church people (maybe @niamhroisin.bsky.social ?) Does a Protestant "Harold's Cross church" still exist? I see on Google Maps that something is tagged as "Harold's Cross Church" next to Our Lady of Rosary but can't tell what it is.

I wonder how long reclamation items – like bog oak - have been a consumer commodity? I am a bit surprised to see this advertisement from 1865 in the Dublin Daily Express as I assumed this sort of stuff was a much more recent phenomenon.
Advertisement that reads "Irish Bog Oak Ornaments" and proceeds to describe how they are designed and manufactured.
