Same. It became “this isn’t a problem, unless your lack of sleep makes it a problem for us” in our family.

MN-1, Tim Walz old district. I’m biased because it’s local, but Walz was the first to flip it from its typical republican representation, and Jake Johnson (another teacher) has a good opportunity to do it again.

@lexfri.xyz I have a request for the App. As someone that has a big backlog, I’d like a button to jump to a random unfinished puzzle with 1 click instead of choosing a specific day. Ideally, if all the ones in recent history are done a button jumps to the front for that random puzzle. Thanks a ton!

Writing something where I will be liberally citing @lilymasonphd.bsky.social's latest and realizing that I can't cite every single thing I would like to because then I'm just reprinting her work. So, I've gotta thread about it instead. muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl...

I am a proud Minnesotan and while she was not my 1st or 2nd choice of a gov to replace Walz, there’s no denying she is a talented political machine.

Yeah, I’ve been watching him go back and forth for days and realized this was the fundamental weakness in his argument and watched others get wrapped around the axle of language. That’s why I offered this example 2x and he hasn’t acknowledged it yet though it avoids the metaphysics he disdains.

It doesn’t help to muddy the waters to use a word in one context with one set of criteria (eg “a mind”) and then use it again with different criteria and context eg (an LLM) and equivocate their meanings.

Jaymes @jaymesrs.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I would need to know how we are defining “Understand” then. I’m Working from a definition of “being aware of the nature of [a thing].” And the nature of a thing includes it’s relational sub-components. And then requires you understand how those relationships work without specifying each example.

Jaymes @jaymesrs.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Yes, it’s more an argument that is a limitation of current models that are stuck rooting their understandings to the forms and order of the training data, so current models can’t be said to ”understand” in a way that is indistinguishable from humans as Will said was difficult outside metaphysics.

So that example is based in a specific prior known example from the research where both “John” and “Mary” are based in specific individuals whose genders are known (Tom Cruise and his mother). That’s why I emphasized that the examples were unique enough that was knowable. arxiv.org/pdf/2309.122...

I’m sorry if I’m not understanding your point. But presume that for my example the limits of microblogging is making this less clear. Assume “John” and “Mary” are stand-ins for unique or rare identifiers.

Reversal Curse in Computational Models
Explore how the reversal curse hampers symmetric inference in LLMs and related domains by failing to generalize reversed associations, impacting practical reasoning.

Is it reasonable to say that understanding simple inversion is a non metaphysical concept. Eg. John is Mary’s son therefore Mary is John’s Mother. Because historically AI models have an issue with this when “John is Mary’s son” is in the training data and “Mary is John’s mother” is not.

Does the reversal curse in AI “Understanding” provide evidence against LLMs being able to think in a way that’s equivalent and indistinguishable from a sapient being?

To be fair, something like “Choose the appropriate military target” and the grid is mostly elementary schools; that would probably trip up LLMs based on relatively recent events.

That’s not a true comparison because dogs already have a sapient mind and we don’t have that in LLMs. They have sapience in the same way one would say a pothole is exactly shaped to fit the puddle. If you want a good explainer, check out 3blue1brown: www.3blue1brown.com?topic=neural...

There’s a story about this told by Jim Butcher. He was arguing that good writing was more important than ingredients, and let a challenger choose the lame story tropes to prove his point. He combined Pokémon and the Lost Roman legion and got Codex Alera and it made the NYT best seller list.

My own interpretation: My hometown is where I currently live (or larger city in proximity). I would say “where I’m from” and “where I grew up” are different though. “From” is born through pre-k (prioritizing most time spent) and “grew up” is where I lived is childhood through HS graduation.

Minnesota has for a long time had a strong “you always help your neighbor” mentality that is honed by winters that would get harsh. If someone is stuck in the snow you stop to push them out. Unfortunately, some people forgot that “neighbors” aren’t just people that look like you and live nearby.
