Check out the cover I made for Sword. This monthly story project hasn't just been helping me with my writing, I've been experimenting with different art tools. This one uses markers, pens, gel pens, coloured pencils, and watercoloured pencils. #art #handdrawn #swordtember #scifiart #sword
The Cover of 'The Ethical Sword' by Jayde Holmes. A hand-drawn picture of a double-edged sword with en elaborate handle covered in red crystals. There is a skull emblem near the top of the handguard. There is also a speaker on the pommel. Red veins run up the blade.
In the background is the planet Pluto done in watercolour pencils. The title and author's name are written in glowing red letters above and below the planet.

Monthly Writing Prompt Challenge #10 – Sword
Okay, things got a little out of control with Dragonslumber spanning two (okay, almost three) months, but we are now back to one short story a month. My October prompt word is 'Sword'. My husband gave me the word so I'd be doing my own version of Swordtember, a challenge where people draw themed swords. I ended up expanding the title to 'The Ethical Sword', and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

The October Monthly Story for the prompt 'Sword' is out now. Check out 'The Ethical Sword', about a talking sword that wants to protect all the people of Pluto. Or at least, that is what it claims. #scifi #fiction #writer #swordtember #shortstory #SF #brainwashing jaydeholmes.com/short-storie...

The Ethical Sword
A sci-fi short story about a talking sword telling soldiers from Pluto that killing isn't really murder.

Don't have too much besides the descriptions I already gave to Kyon, Lacaan and Chaane. Description is hard. Thanks for asking though.

Ty. Still working on details. Tailblade + hand weapon common, but type of handheld weapons vary by culture. It would be a very technical fighting style, so probably upper class. Maybe some sort of polearm for regular infantry. Probs why their gun tech progressed so fast. At least that's my excuse.

Dinosaurs have shorter arms than humans, and having shoulders on the side instead of the back limits their range of movement, so they can't use human swords. To get around this I imagined them having small handheld daggers for close stabs and tailblades for long swinging attacks.

I'm picturing them as raptor dinosaurs with fathered crests. They'd have flat stones that absorb sunlight sewn into form-fitting garments, because reptiles do like warm rocks. following that logic, gemstone jewellery would be popular. Most outer clothing would be body wraps probably.

Monthly Writing Prompt Challenge #9 – Awaken
Well, September has almost ended, so now we need to wake up Empress Maake. No, I didn't delay this post so long just to make a Green Day reference. Dragonslumber just kept getting bigger. 'Slumber' was the prompt for the August story, and when my husband and prompt-giver saw I had come up with a story too big to complete in one month, he gave me 'Awaken' as my September prompt so I could keep working with this story.

Dragonslumber Part 2 Update
So, my Monthly Writing Prompt Challenge Story for September is now 12 days late. The reason for that is because it has ended up being over 20,000 words on it's own, and since its the conclusion of last month's story, this is actually a full on novel I am working with here. It's taking a while to finish off. Fortunately it is basically done, but it really needs some editing.

Update on Part 2 of Dragonslumber. It's turned into a novel. This whole project was to help me write flash fiction and tonight I crossed the 40,000 word mark. It'll be up in the next few days. Probably not edited as much as it needs, but it'll be good. Then I can get back to short stories.

Monthly Writing Prompt Challenge #8 – Slumber
Okay, things are different this month. The prompt was 'Slumber', but as I got into this story I realised that 'Dragonslumber' was a much better title, so for the first time in this challenge, I changed the title. Except the Slumber title did come back in a way. It came back because by the end of the month I realised this was going to be a two-part story, and my husband/prompt giver took pity on me and made the next word 'Awaken' so now, this month's story is '

One thing I love about driving in Australia is seeing so much art on silos and water tanks. Saw this one close to home at Wangi Wangi, in the Hunter Region #australia #art #siloart #watertankart #owl #nswhunterregion #nsw
A giant water tank behind a metal fence. A mural of an owl in a tree with a hollow has been painted into the water tank. Behind the owl a forest of trees with their leaves shed and a full moon have also been painted. At the edge of the mural the logo for 'Hunter Water' has been painted, as well as a smaller 'love Water' logo. Trees and a telecommunication tower can be seen in the background behind the water tank.

There's only the two books out at the moment. A third and final one is meant to be in the works. Even incomplete though, the series is still good. It doesn't leave off on a cliff hanger or anything, and as much as I want more, these two on their own are satisfying enough.

I liked the protagonist Danny's journey. Transitioning, being outed as trans, and learning to master super-powers all together is compelling. Great mix of personal story with superhero story. And then Sovereign comes along and shows what comes next after the origin story and coming out story.

Yeah, it's super fun, and I def read unexpected books while doing it. Out of these 5, Saga Vol.12 and Sovereign were the best, but I would have read Saga Vol.12 anyway. Sovereign is book 2 in the Nemesis series that I started because of last year's Book Bingo, and I love this series.

Monthly Writing Prompt Challenge #7 – Judgement
I cannot believe I have written seven stories in seven months. I'm happy with that achievement, even though I'm still working out how I feel about story #7,Judgement. I also want to apologise for the story being late. I know there are quite a few people who do check up on the site at the first of the month, and I try to have the new story ready, but this time I dropped the ball.
