It is a bummer that our prime minister is pushing oil pipelines rather than... things that won't destroy the world. I guess he must have sucked a lot of oil dick to get elected.

It's Thursday. Would you like to buy a graphic novel containing an illustrated primer on SCURVY? Of course you would. buyolympia.com/Item/lucy-be...
A sample page from Baggywrinkles: a Lubber's Guide to Life at Sea. Lucy sits in the rigging of a tall ship, throwing her arms wide and shouting: "What ho, wrinkles and bags! Today we'll be discussing the biggest, baddest affliction in all of maritime history: scurvy!" "Gasp," cry the sailors, "scurvy?!"A sample comics page from Baggywrinkles: A Lubber's Guide to Life at Sea. In the 17th century, scurvy caused more losses in the British Navy than were suffered in all enemy action. W.J.L. Wharton said "Ever-present in each captain's mind was the dread of the terrible scourge. Every expedition suffered from it. Each hoped they would be exempt, and each in turn was reduced to impotence from its effects." "Hang on," says a sailor, "what effects?" "You really wanna know?" asks Lucy. "Okay, get ready. This ain't pretty."A sample comics page from Baggywrinkles: A Lubber's Guide to Life at Sea titled How to Scurvy. Step 1: feel woozy and sluggish. Step 2: develop achey legs. Step 3: Marvel as your gums begin to swell and bleed. Step 4: Enjoy your newfound leg lesions! (They will probably become gangrenous—lucky you!) Step 5: Beat the winter chill with a high fever. Step 6: Die. Probably from hemorrhaging in your brain!

With the talk of whether it is possible someone hasn't heard a popular song, I often get customers singing along with songs at work, and I have no idea what the song is. Do people still listen to the radio in their cars? Where do people hear music?

Page 13: Panel 1: the two stumble through the door to Sid's apartment while kissing. Panel 2: Zan smiles while removing his coat, Sid kisses his neck and reaches a hand up under his shirt. Panel 3: A wide shot of Sid's apartment. Sid takes Zan's shirt off over his head. Zan's boots and coat lay in a pile towards the entryway. There is a long couch, small kitchen and string lights. The door to the bedroom is behind them.Page 14: Panel 1: Sid smirks, grabbing a hold of Zan's bondage collar with one hand and leaning in. Zan is blushing, breathless, with heavily lidded eyes. Sid says "So uh...this ring just for show or can I...?" Panel 2: a close up of their faces in profile, Zan whispers "It's for you-" Panel 3: a close up of Zan's mouth smirking with one tiny sharp tooth showing "-to do whatever you want, please." Panel 4: a wide shot, showing both of them standing. Sid leans against the back of the couch and pulls Zan into them. Zan stands between Sid's legs with his hands on their chest. Sid's hand cradles the back of Zan's head, their other hand slides down his shorts to grab his ass. Sid says "Jesus. Whatever I want, huh? Haha." They smile into a kiss.Page 15: panel 1: Sid takes Zan's wrists and holds them up near his head, walking him backwards, "You like being tied up?" they ask. Sid blushes, smiling and says "uh huh." Panel 2: A close up of their faces as Sid leans in close and whispers into Zan's mouth "do you have a safe word?". Panel 3: A pulled back shot of the two from behind, Sid pushes Zan against the wall, placing their knee between his legs. Zan says breathes out "AH" and "I-I'll let you know if I want to stop." Panel 4: A close up profile shot of the two as Sid teases Zan with their tongue before a kiss. Zan arches his neck up desperately towards their mouth, a little drop of sweat pouring off of them.Page 16: A full page shot of the two from the side in two panels without borders. Sid kisses Zan with a wide mouth, they hold his jaw in one hand and push Zan's wrists upwards against the wall, so his arms are straight up above his head. Zan's erection presses against Sid's thigh. Panel 2: Sid breaks the kiss for a moment, just wide enough to whisper into Zan's mouth "Mmm, God yer cute."

It's not as hot as the summer but it's not too cold for t-shirts yet. In this seasonable space between extreme weather, please enjoy a nice walk to The Cameron House for our September Comic Jam. We'll have the usual silly sequential comics spewing forth, a scintillating soundtrack on the stereo, and maybe a few snacks. Not to mention we'll have a new zine of last month's finished pages for you to savour.

I'll also have this 12 page collection of new auto-bio comics!
An illustration that serves as the cover to a collection of comics called "Why Are You Biting Me?". It shows the artist laying on top of her partner Eric, biting his ear. Eric has glasses, he is laying flat on his stomach in bed, with a pillow under his head. He looks confused and a little annoyed, he is speaking the title in a large word balloon. The artist has a partially shaved head, with a shock of blonde hair on one side. They have a goofy expression, the sound effect NAW NAW NAW is coming from them. The sub title says "A kid with experience collection by Jess Fink".

GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...
reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…
