Looking at the outbound bandwidth from my mail server, it shows around 100 gigabytes out, which matches what I had seen in "data since reconnect" page. I wonder if a UniFi firmware update a few days ago caused it to drop some session data.

Apple doesn't do the best job communicating known issues. That said, I'm trying to think of a company that does a great job...throwing stones in glass houses and all that.

Now I’m a bit less sure in that UniFi is now only showing around 10 gigabytes in the last week which was less than the 60 or so. But it did trip some network monitoring on my mail server so still not trivial. And definitely not good if you only have cellular…

My phone has been stuck at 43% since Monday. My iPad I think did index all the way, but did so by I guess redownloading my entire mail inbox to the tune of many tens of gigabytes of data per my router.

Well if you’re going to buy multiple phones just for different colors, just go for a six pack of both duos and all four colors of the 18 Pro.

I’m sure that’s why they added that feature to support multiple iPhones with the same number, right?

On my phone choosing iOS 27 still showed 26.7 anyways. But it did install 27. My confidence continues to grow.

macOS 27’s notes telling me it will bring “faster and smoothers experiences” is really inspiring confidence.

One of the great parts about the American health care system is the detailed bills you get.
A screenshot of a detailed bill, which has a single line containing some markup of "HBDETBILL" -- some sort of glitch where the generated bill didn't get the actual detailed bill content.

As a comparison: life insurance. I’m in the group Microsoft plan. It would be easy for me at any point to call up my insurance agent and ask for a quote for the same amount of coverage. There’s a few details of course with life insurance but it’s a quote you can get to make a proper comparison.

And that’s the crazy part: you can’t really even answer that question. You can perhaps find a plan with the same deductibles but who knows if the coverage details are the same, or the network. Or how aggressive they are with needing preapproval.

Jason Malinowski @jasonmalinowski.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I don’t think that’s a tepid take, or even a take. It’s just…fact? And even if employers want to compete on providing better coverage than some baseline, it’s still crazy that if you aren’t employed that the marketplace is absolutely bizarre at that point.

'tis the season to wonder why Amazon doesn't give you any sane way to say "this is a gift from so-and-so" on the shipping label. Because nothing brings the holiday spirit like sending an email to all your family with the tracking code wondering who should open this random package.

Me: I need to log into Facebook. Facebook, here's my password and 2FA code. Facebook: SOMEBODY IS TRYING TO LOG INTO YOUR ACCOUNT! YOU NEED TO REVIEW THE LOGIN! Me: uh, that's me? 10 seconds ago? on the same device?
A silly dialog saying "Someone recently tried to log into your account from an unrecognized computer or mobile browser. Because you set up two-factor authentication, your account is temporarily locked. Please complete the following steps to regain access to your account."

If you installed the Visual Studio 2026 preview and were getting lots of errors trying edit C# code…sorry about that. We shipped a fix an hour ago so go check for updates in your Visual Studio Installer.

When replacing the plumbing under your sink drain, it's important to check if your sink is one and a quarter inch pipe, one in a half inch pipe, or, per Home Depot's filter, one and a half foot pipe.
An image from Home Depot's website letting you filter by the size of the fitting, with an entry measured in feet rather than the logical inches.

As a physicist I can easily calculate time dilation from relativistic motion (time slows when you're moving fast) or proximity to a massive object (time slows in gravity) but I have yet to find a solution for emotional time dilation (the task takes five minutes to complete but six weeks to start) 🫠

Also let’s say we want to pay. How do we ensure future devs on the team remember to get a license and pay? What does that mean when some person outside our team sends a code fix to our repo? The overhead of all of this simply isn’t worth the cost.

Yep, the price is far too steep, especially when it’s per dev. And it’s not like a unit test framework doesn’t already come with its own assertion library. One internal product I know used FluentAssertions in some tests; it’ll be easier and cheaper to switch it to xUnit asserts than pay this.

It’s also nice that if you lose power, their network doesn’t go down. So when we lost power during the storm last month we could still use internet (until my UPS for the router went out.) Obviously if a tree takes out a pole-mounted fiber line it’s a different story.

Some of their engineering folks are on Reddit and when there is a question of “how do I see how much data I use” their response is paraphrased as “why would we even track that?” They just want to make a solid network and make people happy that way.

Service has been good. Fast, reliable, and it’s nice being able to toss around huge files without thinking about it. Or when I got a new Xbox I downloaded a half of terabyte of games without giving it a second thought of data caps.

For gigabit the introductory price was $60/month for us in Redmond; it went to $80/month after a year. There have been two $5/month increases so it’s now $90/month here.
